“Looking for weapons? Stores of ammunition? Important papers? What else were we to think? The Loyalists often use children to do their dirty work!” two cousins are accused in Marianne Hering and Nancy I. Sander’s The Imagination Station series book, The Redcoats Are Coming!
At one hundred and forty-four pages, this thirteenth in the series paperback book is targeted toward ages six to nine years old. With no profanity, sex, or extreme violence, this fictional tome recalls Paul Revere’s famous ride. Illustrator David Hohn includes over a dozen black and white drawings throughout the storyline. At the end of the book, there is a page dedicated to the next book in the series and a secret word puzzle, with authors and illustrator’s biographies.
In this historical tale, Beth and Patrick visit their friend, Whit, at his workshop where they are shown a two hundred year old Bible. From it falls a yellowed sealed envelope addressed to the legendary Paul Revere. Wanting to know more about the letter inside, Beth and Patrick get in Whit’s Imagination Station and are catapulted back in time to the start of the American Revolution.
When they arrive in Concord, Massachusetts in 1775, they befriend a young girl named Sybil who helps the cause of freedom by covertly collecting musket balls for ammunition against the Loyalists. Using secret codes during meetings with John Hancock and Samuel Adams, the three children glean the needed supplies.
Two newcomers see Patrick put the musket balls in a saddle bag and happen upon the letter to Paul Revere. The two spies follow and try to get Patrick and Beth in trouble, telling others the kids are Loyalists pretending to be Patriots.
At first Sybil and others think the children are traitors but the two men’s true colors are shown. Patrick, Beth, and the town’s citizens help Hancock, Adams, and Revere with their patriotic plans, including spreading the word that the “Redcoats are coming!”
With an unexpected ending, young avid readers who enjoy history in a fanciful, futuristic format will have to wait for the next exciting book in the series to find out what happens to the cousins. Although adding to history, the book mentions major players in America’s freedom, corncribs, men-of-war, and two battles during the time period.
