Some people might label them “problem children.” Medical personnel might be quick to suggest medication to fix the situation.

But Maureen Dawn Healy, author and expert in child development and healing, suggests that there is a more gentle and spiritual approach toward dealing with the highly sensitive, hyperactive, creative but defiant children also known as “Indigos.”

Her book is aimed at helping parents in particular harness and re-direct the Indigo energy into something useful and peaceful.

Just what – or who – is an Indigo child? The literal term could have been better explained by Healy, but it appears to refer to the indigo blue color of the child’s aura, associated with the sixth chakra, relating to intuition.

Yes, skeptics, it is “that” kind of a book, filled with talk of auras and crystals, of color therapy and flower essences. It’s likely that the book won’t appeal to everyone, because it is heavily involved with metaphysical and spiritual themes.

If readers are open to channeling energy and less conventional techniques, there will be much of interest. Readers who are non-believers or just not well-versed spiritually could do worse than reading the book with an open mind. Some of the suggestions might seem unusual, but it’s fair to say they are safer than extensive psychiatric treatments or drugs.

The term “Indigo child” may be somewhat new. At first glance, it might seem they are a new breed of child descended from aliens or that they’ve just touched down from outer space. But the behavior they exhibit is well-established and has been a major challenge to children, parents and teachers.

In fact, there is much to be learned even if the label is put aside. The children Healy describes are easily bored, distracted, stubborn and angry, yet also sensitive, creative and emotional in a good way. They are often very gifted in a particular area and can contribute much if handled properly. In fact, Healy suggests that if they are dealt with properly, these children will, in her words, “change broken aspects of government, education and healthcare”, among other things beneficial to society.

Think of Angelina Jolie, Johnny Depp, Michael Phelps and Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg, all overachieving Indigos, according to the author, who has studied with the Dalai Lama, is a frequent lecturer on spirituality, and blogs for PBS and Psychology Today.

Healy describes common triggers that set off and escalate bad behavior: Dishonesty, an authoritarian approach, lack of freedom, communication and sensitivity (fear, for example). She explains why punishment and other traditional approaches not only don’t work but might heighten the problem, when dealing with these children.

Simple changes of wording can make a difference when dealing with the children, in addition, of course, to the metaphysical techniques suggested.

The Energetic Keys to Indigo Kids, whose subtitle is Your Guide to Raising and Resonating with the New Children, is intriguing reading and just may be the missing ingredient in helping parents and children effectively deal with a misunderstood personality challenge.
