Think about some of those good times you and your spouse spent together prior to tying the knot. Can you remember the excitement? The sense of discovery? Can you recall what it felt like to learn about his or her favorite childhood memories?” Dr. Greg and Erin Smalley write in their book, Little Book of Great Dates.

At one hundred and thirty-six pages, this small notecard-size book comes with a dark blue leather-type soft cover targeted toward couples looking for dating ideas and reconnecting with each other in their marriage. With no profanity or adult sexual content, the New International Version of the Bible is used.

After a nine page introduction from the authors of their personal experiences dating and five important reminders when on a date, there are fifty-two chapters that cover two to three pages of creative ideas each.

The chapter’s theme starts with a quote from a famous person such as C.S. Lewis, Emily Post, Elvis Presley, Jerry Seinfeld, Nicholas Sparks, Mark Twain, or U2 with minor emphasis on the Bible, God, or one’s personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

The main portion of the chapter is several paragraphs about the topic and how to build a bonding, lasting relationship with the mate by being reminded to ask about current experiences, discuss new activities, reminisce about the past, or communicate intimacy.

Each chapter has suggested activities that can range from singing karaoke, going to poetry readings, or perusing a bookstore to more eclectic ideas such touching different fabrics in a store, playing hide-n-seek at the mall, or go skydiving.

The final section in each chapter is titled Questions, where the husband and wife share what they experienced, learned, or felt during the joint activity and ways to enhance, change, or expand on the idea.

As an example, the chapter called “Laugh with Me” has a quote from W.H. Auden. There are several paragraphs about the benefits of laughing. The activities suggested are to tell funny stories, go to a comedy club, or find a clean book on jokes while the question section is to discuss funny quirks or silly antics from one’s past.

While one chapter in the book promotes spending $29.95 online at Focus on the Family’s for a “Couple Checkup” assessment, newly married couples who are not imaginative in their relationship my find some of these date ideas interesting while some seasoned couples find them obvious or not even considered due to their personalities.
