“But it was by that fervent, eager prayer that Marget knew that the little gold shoe had someway got entangled with her lad’s heartstrings, and she could only pray the more, that the Lord’s will might be done;” Grace Livingston Hill writes in her novel in the Love Endures series, The Gold Shoe.

At two hundred and fifty-four pages, this paperback book is targeted toward readers who enjoy light romance, relationships, and learning about opposite lifestyles. With no profanity but mentioning of alcoholism and smoking, mature readers would enjoy its contents with quotes from the King James Version of the Bible.

Born in the nineteenth century, Grace Livingston Hill wrote over one hundred novels and was considered the pioneer of Christian romance. In reading her tomes being republished, the reader is instantly transported back in time with descriptive, expressive, and detailed scenes.

This story begins in the late nineteen twenties in Connecticut on a train stuck in the deep snow, limping to the small town of Stonington where the young, wealthy and beautiful Anastasia Endicott gets off, cold, wet, and abandoned.

Rushing to go to a dance at a country estate, she is dressed impeccably, wearing a velvet gown with a pair of jeweled gold shoes. Both her apparel and heart become cold, wet, and useless as she falls down in a snow drift trying to reach the station during the blizzard.

Young handsome preacher Thurly Macdonald finds the woman in distress and carries her to his mother’s nearby home to recuperate while he later stumbles upon her missing shoe. Too busy with upcoming sermons, he forgets about the shoe but his heart does not forget the girl’s lovely eyes.

Thurly’s mother, Marget, loves dotting on the new guest but is fearful of her son falling in love with a woman of the world. As she invades her son’s privacy, she finds the shoe but does not confront him about why it is still in his possession.

As the shoe bonds the three together in friendship and love, the wealthy girl is challenged by her lifestyle of smoking and drinking and belief in God when she experiences how common folk live. When Thurly and Anastasia return to their separate lives, the shoe becomes the link that brings them back together.

Like previous Hill’s Christian romance books, this one reflects the Biblical stance of being separated from the world and not a part of it while it professes the eternal plan of salvation.
