But in the end it’s still a game of golf, and if at the end of the day you can’t shake hands with your opponents and still be friends, then you’ve missed the point,” Bradford G. Wheler quotes Payne Stewart in his book, Golf Sayings – Wit & Wisdom of a Good Walk Spoiled.

This thin paperback book has one hundred and fourteen pages of compilations by famous golfers, athletes, entertainers, writers and Unites States Presidents. Targeted toward readers who love the game of golf, there are colored copies of works and photographs of thirteen artists from ten countries on almost every page. With some profanity and topics of sex, the book would be geared toward mature readers.

Divided into ten chapters, quotes and artwork are listed under topics that include: That’s Golf, The Pros, Golf Humor, Winning & Losing, Sportsmanship, Frustration, Scotland, Presidential Golf, Hogan, Jones, Nelson & Snead, and The Back 9. At the end are fourteen pages dedicated to artists’ biographies, a two page index of enclosed quotations by contributor, an author biography, and page about other available books.

Flipping through the pages, here are examples taken from each chapter:
“Golf is not a funeral, though both can be very sad affairs.” Bernard Darwin (1876-1961)
“At Augusta National they bikini-wax the greens.” Gary McCord (1948-)
“If you drink, don’t drive. Don’t even putt.” Dean Martin (1917-1995)
“Winning isn’t everything, but wanting it is.” Arnold Palmer (1929-)
“Golf is a game not just of manners but of morals.” Art Spander (1938-)
“Thinking instead of acting is the number-one golf disease.” Sam Snead (1912-2002)
“Unlike the other Scotch game of whisky-drinking, excess is not injurious to the health.” Sir Walter Simpson (18??-19??)
“If Bill Clinton is an 8-handicap, I’m Bobby Jones.” President George H. Bush (1946-)
“Too much ambition is a bad thing to have in a bunker.” Bobby Jones (1902-1971)
“The older I get the better I used to be.” Lee Trevino (1939-)

With artists contributing such as Lesley Giles, Paulette Farrell, Christine LaGrow, Marian Williams, and golfer Steve Lamb to name a few, it is an interesting book to pick up now and then and remember the many greats in golf and how they impacted and viewed the time-honored game.
