Whether you want to drop a few pounds to get back into your skinny jeans or if you’re in need of losing some serious weight for health reasons, Dr. James A. Surrell’s SOS (Stop Only Sugar Diet) is the one you need to take a look at. This is a short, easy book (I read it in one Saturday afternoon) with an uncomplicated, easy-to-follow plan—but the results are nothing short of spectacular.

Let’s face it: Americans have gotten ugly-fat. Two-third of adults and one-third of our children are overweight, and the results are disastrous. We are literally killing ourselves by what we eat.

How did this happen? When you look at the old time movies and photographs, the people are slender and attractive. It was only the odd person here and there that was obese. Now being overweight is the norm. Dr. Surrell explains that in the late 1890s, in the U.S. the average consumption of sugar was about four to five pounds per person per year. Now, the average American consumes about 140 pounds of sugar per year. Is there any question that we’re eating too much sugar?

Dr. Surrell, medical doctor and surgeon, conducted his own study in 2008 with 17 volunteers, 10 females and 7 males. They agreed to go on the SOS (Stop Only Sugar) diet and have their results recorded. The individual stories are in Chapter 2, and they make for inspirational reading. He went on to help hundreds of people lose unhealthy fat. In addition, the doctor used his SOS diet to get rid of recently gained weight himself. But most impressive is the lasting results this diet gives. Unlike all the other fads, programs, and regimes, with the SOS, the people maintained their slimmer bodies—and many lowered their cholesterol levels as well.

Dr. James A. Surrell is well-qualified as an expert speaker and writer. He has 20-plus years’ experience seeing many thousands of patients. He practices colorectal surgery and a large part of his practice is devoted to nutrition, weight management, cancer screening, and overall digestive health. He is a member of the American College of Surgeons and the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons. He is also a compassionate man who cares about America. Oh yes, and he has a great sense of humor that comes out in his writing.

I learned so much from this small book. For example, I now understand why the low-fat diet I went on didn’t work and how to decipher how much sugar is really in jam or potato chips. One of my favorite parts was learning the truth about all the different sugar substitutes on the market. Dr. Surrell’s immaculate and thorough research clearly differentiates fact from myth. I also loved learning how fiber plays an important part in preventing hunger and cravings.

Personally, I was disappointed at the lack of decent copyediting and page design. All good writers depend on a copyeditor and page designer in order to make a professional presentation out of their information. Unfortunately, the good doctor’s team fell short. Quotation mark errors,  inconsistent layout, and excessive repetition are things I would normally subtract stars for in a review. However, Dr. Surrell’s information is so good and so important to America, I decided not to fault him personally in this review for the bad performance of his team. I sincerely hope this is fixed in his next edition.

Bottom line: If you’re sick and tired of being overweight and even more sick and tired of diets that don’t work and don’t last, pick up the SOS Stop Only Sugar Diet and create your own success story.
