Jesus is a friend to you. He loves you, and he listens too. He keeps your secrets in his heart, so talk to him – that’s where you start. You can pray or sing a song. He is with you all day long. He will always be your friend. His love for you will never end.” This is one of the rhymes in Crystal Bowman and Teri McKinley’s children’s book, My Mama & Me – Rhyming Devotions for You and Your Child.

At sixty-eight pages, this over-sized hardback book is targeted to children up to five years old. Mother and daughter authors promote teaching young ones about God, Jesus and His love. Simplistic illustrations by Phyllis Harris are on the left side of almost all pages while wording is on the left. With the book using mainly the New Living Translation of the Bible, this reader wishes all pronouns of God were capitalized for reverence.

After instructions on how and when to use the book, there are twenty-five rhyming devotions separated into four sections that include the character of God, who Jesus is, what God thinks of the child and how the child can love God. The ending has a mother’s prayer along with the authors’ biographies.

With each devotion covering two pages, there is the title on the top left side of the page with a drawing and Bible verse written under it. The right side of the page lists the rhyming devotion and a short prayer. At the bottom there is a fun idea for mother and child to do together that hones in on the concept of the topic.

An example of a devotion is titled “Think about Good Things,” listing Philippians 4:8 as the Bible verse. The poem says, “In the sky and on the ground, God made good things all around. Think about the mountains tall or tiny snowflakes as they fall. Think about God’s love for you and how his promises are true. Read the Bible, sing and pray. Think of good things every day.” The prayer asks God to help think about different things He has made, about the Bible and thanking Him for them. The fun idea is a game naming two things God put in the sky, on the ground, and that He tells us in the Bible.

As an introduction to God, Jesus and the Bible, this storybook is one way for a mother to show her child God’s goodness, Jesus’s friendship and His eternal love for us.
