My fascination with hummingbirds started many years ago when a tiny yet incredibly mesmorizing hummingbird flew past me while I was on vacation at my husband's grandparents. The creature piqued my interest and every year we visited, I watched for it. Most years I wasn't around when they were. Fast forward a few years, and a few houses later and now I am again blessed with their presence. I am lucky enough to have the time to sit on my patio and watch as they dance around my yard, collecting the nectar from the flowers and at times drinking from the feeder I have out for them; which, in all honesty is set out right beside my seat so I can marvel at them when they crave the sweet syrup.
When I came across The Hummingbird That Answered My Heart's Calling'written and photographed by Noelle M. Meade-Izzi, I was instantly wanting to read about what I now call a heart warming amd tear evoking, journey. A journey between the author and a creature so fascinating, that when blessed by its company, Meade-Izzi's concludes, changed her view of life.
The book is a well written, engaging journey between two souls; one human and one bird, which begins with the discovery of a tiny nest situated in a pine tree one April afternoon. After discovering the nest, Meade-Izzi soon meets the owner of it; a hummingbird whom she names Artemis. Unbeknownst at the time, a bond between this tiny bird and the author would form.
Meade-Izzi tells of how she is privy to the life and joy of the tiny bird. She watches as Artemis gathers more items for her nest, creating a comfortable and safe environment for the egg that the bird will soon produce. And when that egg hatches, Artemis summons Meade-Izzi to come and see the wonder of the tiny new born which Meade-Izzi names Baby. She watches in marvel as Baby grows and observes the way Artemis cares for it. She watches as Baby takes flight for the first time. And she watches when Artemis comes to say a last goodbye
Throughout the book, Meade- Izzi weaves her own thoughts and inspirations from the goings on, in a way that I believe may positively impact readers and may make them look at life and nature differently.
The book contains a prologue, followed by 29 chapters, and then rounded out with the epilogue: The Afterglow. Following the epilogue are a few pages containing interesting facts on hummingbirds, including information on The Hummingbird Society and tips on how to protect hummingbirds. There are 40 full color photographs throughout the book, all taken by Noelle M. Meade-Izzi.
In the prologue, Meade-Izzi states, "While this book is many things, there are many things this book is not: it is not a 'How-To' manual on methods of attracting hummingbirds; it is not an educational picture book that illustrates the many species of hummingbirds in North America; nor is it a documentary on the life and times of the hummingbird. On the contrary, this story is a wondrous encounter that brings to light the parallels between nature and humans."
And that is exactly what it does. This encounter pulled at my heart strings and made me shed more than a few tears, but it also made me stop and look at nature and the beauty around me. So, if you get the chance to read this book, do so, as there are not many people who can tell you about a life changing encounter with a hummingbird.
