Women need encouragement in their daily lives – whether it comes from their spouses, parents, children or friends. In Renee Swope, Lysa TerKeurst, Samantha Evilsizer and the Proverbs 31 Team, encouragement is the main theme in this devotional.

At two hundred and twenty-one pages, this paperback book is a compilation of devotions for everyday living that three women with the help of fifteen team members have put together containing one hundred topics covering two to three pages each. At the end of the book are two appendixes, one about God’s names and the other about Bible versions, along with all authors’ short biographies.

The worshipful stories are written by several different authors and start with a themed title and a Bible verse, usually from the New International Version. After several paragraphs about the topic and a short prayer, all devotionals have one to two sentences of follow-up listed under Remember, Reflect, and Respond. The end includes a “power verse” to complete the subject.

Besides the three authors, the Proverbs 31 Team includes unknown to known writers such as Wendy Blight, Micca Campbell, Amy Carroll, Lynn Cowell, Karen Ehman, T. Suzanne Eller, Sharon Glasgow, Nicki Koziarz, Tracie Miles, Rachel Olsen, Wendy Pope, Luann Prater, Melissa Taylor, Van Walton, and Glynnis Whitwer.

With the hundred devotionals written mostly in first person by women, all ages, parent, grandparent, child, married, single, employed or unemployed are included. Topics range from marriage, time management issues, worrying, loneliness, depression, bitterness, and pain to God’s wonderful love, His redemption, accepting His control and how He can fill our empty hearts.

Take Luann Prater’s “When People Drive You Crazy” that lists Romans 12:18 as the key verse. She writes about a new friend, Sue, who was needy, clingy and a “grinder” who constantly wanted her attention. Luann had to ask herself three questions: did she listen with compassion and respond with love, did she set limits on seeing Sue, and was it time to walk away from the relationship. When Sue and Luann met for lunch, Luann apologized for being aloof and set boundaries by praying with her friend. From then on, both women could move forward in the relationship. Luann says to remember to set boundaries, reflect to make sure responding in love, and respond by dealing with other “grinders” in our lives. The “power verses” were Romans 14:19 and Proverbs 16:7.

This book would make a nice gift for any woman to give a friend who needs the encouragement to feel more comfortable with others and herself based on God’s Word. It would be a good book for the night stand to recall, remember and relinquish to God those every day troubles in our lives.
