What if we could build a moment of peace into every single day of the year, intentionally opening our hearts to the peace God has promised? What would it be like to live with less fear and anxiety and with more confidence and joy?” Ann Spangler asks in the introduction of her book, The One Year Devotions for Women – Becoming a Woman at Peace.

At three hundred and seventy-five pages, this thick paperback book is targeted toward Christian women who are seeking a daily Biblical devotional about finding more peace and contentment in their lives through Christ.

Using mainly the New Living Translation of the Bible, other versions such as the Living Bible, New King James, King James, New International, The Message, and English and Revised Standard versions are noted. References by month are included at the end of the book. This reader wishes all pronouns of God were capitalized for reverence.

The top of each page depicts the date of the year along with a title and short Bible verse or verses. The main portion of the page is a story or experience by the author which may include quotes by famous individuals such as Augustine, Francis Chan, Martin Luther King Jr., Charles Stanley, or Rick Warren. The bottom has a short one to two sentence prayer.

As an example, looking at the month of June, a few topics include Give It a Rest, The Acid Test, Confronting Evil, Peace with Question Marks, and Don’t Shrink Back. June fifth’s theme is Don’t Bring It in the Boat and lists Proverbs 4:4-6. The story is about the author’s love of fishing and how she caught an eel once and was told not to bring it in the boat. Correlating it to bringing wrong relationships, habits and thoughts into our lives where they slowly take over, we need to ask God to cut the ties and purge them. The prayer is “Father, sometimes I don’t know what’s good for me. But you do. Help me recognize danger before I even get close to it. Keep me safe, I pray.”

With little Bible study of the Scriptures, this daily devotional may be helpful for the new believer to get into the Word a little at a time. For seasoned believers, it may be a helpful read in conjunction with the Bible as one grows closer to God.
