Inside Seka is the story of two women: Seka, the platinum-haired siren of Seventies and Eighties X-rated films, and Dorothea (Dottie) Patton, the plain-spoken woman who cultivated this porn persona while never losing sight of her humble origins.

For anyone with an interest in the evolution of adult films, this book sheds light on a critical period in its history. Pornographic movies have existed since the beginning of the medium itself, in the form of “loops” or stag films, with barely a hint of a plot or scenario to anchor the all-important sex scenes. In the wake of the sexual revolution of the Sixties and early Seventies, the cultural climate allowed for a more professional, Hollywood-type approach to porn films. Adult theatres popped up all over the country to exhibit the films, and in a world yet without home video options, customers would duck into these theatres (or booths) to view the forbidden novelties.

Seka’s platinum hair (a fluke caused by a hurried dye job prior to a shoot) and striking features made her a memorable figure among her contemporaries. During her career, she starred in over 100 titles, retiring while still in her physical prime.

Dottie’s story is one of overcoming adversity and learning hard lessons beginning at an early age. Abandoned by her family, raised in an orphanage and, later, by relatives, she was not sexually active until after marriage. A series of relationships with manipulative, exploitative men eventually led her into the burgeoning business of adult entertainment. One betrayal after another finally forced her to take control of both her image and her earnings, setting an example for other females in this field to follow, including producing one of her own films in order to ensure its quality. She stood her ground against macho costars, shady producers, and even Congressional inquisitors, testifying at the Meese Commission hearings. During the height of the AIDS epidemic of the Eighties, producers stubbornly refused her demands for safe sex practices in scenes and, rather than back down, she walked away from the industry and her career.

How does a retired porn star make a living? She certainly doesn’t wait for the royalties from her films to roll in as they’re converted to VHS, DVD or internet media; that will never happen. Instead, Dottie rolled up her sleeves and went to work: bartending, operating a hot dog stand, doing occasional photo spreads, stripping, hosting a radio show, attending trade shows and conventions and, eventually, starting her own website. For some, such a fall from grace might have led them to regret their past and shun the limelight, but Dottie uses her Seka celebrity when it suits her: for charitable causes, for example, or just to make ends meet, but always on her terms.

She tells great stories about people with whom she’s worked, including John Holmes and Ron Jeremy, and various celebrities she’s encountered from the fields of sports, comedy, music and film. But the focus throughout is on Seka, and her story of survival is nothing less than inspirational. Dottie has a great sense of humor and a clear-eyed, blue-collar sensibility, outspoken in her criticism of the adult film industry’s shabby treatment of its performers’ health and financial well being. She’s also blunt about severing relationships with her family, boyfriends and business partners.

But hers is, ultimately, an uplifting story. If she had considered herself to have been a victim, she wouldn’t have lasted this long. There are a lot of laughs throughout her story, and a generous helping of photographs accompanies the narrative. Unapologetic and passionate, the Seka persona may lure you in, but it’s Dottie who will make you glad you stayed.
