Although a work of fiction, Beneath The Mountain
brings forth realism at its very best. Kimberly James has done
a stellar job of creating characters that breathe life into this
great work.
Eighty seven year old Elizabeth Emery Silva takes us back in time to the year 1903, where as a young girl she lived and dreamed beneath the shadow of Turtle Mountain. Elizabeth—Beth—was a tiny young lady with larger than life dreams of becoming one of the country’s first female doctors. Her father planned to see that she fulfilled this dream by sending her to medical school in the city of Victoria.
Beth’s father was a hard man who worked in the coal
mines tunneling deep into the bowels of Turtle Mountain. And
although he was harsh to the point of being cruel at times, he loved
his daughter, his wife, and all his children. Life as a coal
miner turned the men hard; it was their only way of surviving.
Young Beth discovers a terrible secret about her family that her mother has kept hidden for many years. And while her love and respect for her mother grows, she is at odds with her feelings for her eldest brother, Thomas, and her father. Beth tries unsuccessfully to break through the hard shell of her brother’s personality. He is so different from her other brothers and sisters, she can’t seem to understand him at all.
Just a few days before Beth is to leave on the train
that will take her to school in Victoria, Beth meets and falls deeply
in love with a handsome young miner named Joe. Joe is
just as smitten with Beth as she is with him and their love grows in
leaps and bounds as the time for her leaving draws ever nearer.
Beth’s father finds out about her relationship to the young miner and in his fear that she will abandon her plans for school, he beats her unmercifully and tells her she is to no longer see the young man. Later that same night, Beth’s brother goes to the mine and tells their father that Beth has sneaked off to spend the night in a hotel with Joe. This is the last straw for Beth’s father.
He rushes home to retrieve his gun and goes after the wayward couple.
Beth and Joe innocently plan their future on the eve
of one of the most horrific natural disasters ever to encompass the
great northern land that is Canada. Turtle Mountain is well
known to the native Indians as ‘the mountain that walks’.
And on this night Turtle Mountain lives up to its name.
You will not want to miss this great work of fiction and fact. A wonderful story of true love, hopes and dreams.
