No matter what you’ve done for yourself or for humanity, if you can’t look back on having given love and attention to your own family, what have you really accomplished?” Elbert Hubbard is quoted in You’re One Amazing Grandma, with artwork by Lori Siebert.

This small, square hardbound gift book has sixty four pages and it targeted toward those loving, caring grandmothers in our lives. With one to two quotes on almost every page by famous people, there are also children’s innocent comments set apart by white frames with a special font every few pages.

Similar to Siebert’s other gift books, the artist has fanciful birds, colorful butterflies, beautiful flowers and creative backgrounds that encase the tender words related to grandmothers. Some designs are cut and pasted to form an object while others are intricate paintings and drawings.

With quotes from authors and statesmen such as Alcott, Bray, Browning, Dickens, Frost, Emerson, Epictetus, Holmes, Hugo, Jefferson, Plato, Rousseau, Shakespeare, Thackeray, Vigny, von Goethe and Wiggin, there are also Italian, Irish, Welsh and Biblical proverbs.

The simplistic, innocent yet thoughtful comments by young children like Amanda, Ann, Jeff and Tim make the book even more unique as they bring comfort, joy and peace, knowing love is behind each one of them.

Here are a few of the sweet sayings:

“Blessed by the hand that prepares a pleasure for a child, for there is no saying when and where it may bloom forth,” is by Douglas William Jerrod.

Amanda writes her favorite memory as “One special afternoon, Grammy let me go through her jewelry box. As I piled on necklaces, earrings, and brooches, Grammy told me the story behind each treasure.”

Fanny Fern states, “Uncles and aunts and cousins are all very well, and fathers and mothers are not to be despised; but a grandmother at holiday time is worth them all.”

A favorite memory of Nana by Jeff is “Nana often invited me to play word games, like Scrabble and anagrams, and let me believe that I beat her fair and square.

I thank my God every time I remember you,” from Philippians in the Bible (NIV).

This book makes a nice, thoughtful gift for anyone’s loved grandma or a perfect item on a bedside table when grandmother comes to visit. With its shiny glossy embossed hardcover and thicker paper inside, it will last through time as a cherished memory.

This book was furnished by Harvest House Publishers for review purposes.
