I found it fascinating how God, the Universe, the Supreme Intelligence – however we choose to label it – equips all beings with an intuition that’s unyielding. This awareness is not exclusive to the ‘thinking’ humans, but rather, woven and spun through all life forms,” Noelle M. Meade-Izzi writes in her book, The Hummingbird That Answered My Heart’s Calling.

At eighty pages, this square hardcover book is a pictorial journey of the writer’s inner thoughts and observances watching a tiny hummingbird build a nest and take care of her little offspring. With beautiful, stunning photographs by the author usually on the right side of the page, the story is written on the left side on a golden background that makes the light font sometimes hard to read. A dark brown border enhances both the exquisite photographs and wording on every page.

Targeted more to adults than young children, Meade-Izzi notices a small bird’s nest being built in a pine tree near the balcony of her home. Fascinated and enamored by such a minute creature, she names the mother hummingbird Artemis, after the goddess guardian of nature and watches with humility and patience as the creative, functional nest is built, the miniscule egg is hatched and the baby bird comes to maturity.

Having to leave for a week in Paris, the writer anxiously comes back to see the proud mother showing off her charge. While observing the winged wonder, she notices how giving, nurturing and protective the bird is of its offspring as it seems to bond with her. More than once the bird hovers near her to get her attention, as if to show her something special.

Through trusting, intuition, faith, love and appreciation, the author is humbled and awed how little we as humans observe our surroundings and God’s creation. Focusing on the smallest bird in the world’s unique characteristics and flying capabilities, one easily understands how this particular bird symbolizes tireless joy.

With a new-age approach to Mother Nature, the author reminds us to slow down, be quiet and listen to the world around us to find inner peace and comfort. By witnessing such a small but complex animal, one can learn how this bird tends, coaches and encourages its young. In turn, we can learn from it to love, nurture and protect those around us.
