The Hummingbird That Answered My Heart’s Calling by Noelle M. Meade-Izzi is a visual delight. Each page of this square hardbound book showcases a magnificent full-size photograph of the hummingbird or her nest. The sequence of photos chronicle the story of the author’s discovery.

As with many Americans, the author was feeling the emotional pressures of the economic times. Then one day, while on a walk, she made a discovery that turned her life around. She spied a miniscule nest hidden amidst hanging pinecones. As she was pondering what tiny creature could live there, a hummingbird swooped in and took her perch. Day by day, she observed the bird build her nest with moss, lichen, bits of cotton, plant fibers, and even dryer lint—all “glued” together with spider webs.

But just as the day of birth was drawing near, Meade-Izzi was scheduled to take a trip to Paris. She feared she would miss the mama bird’s big day. A week later, she returned home at midnight and fell into bed. Early the next morning, she awoke to the sound of buzzing wings at her window. It was the hummingbird looking for her, trying to get her attention.

Quickly, she dressed and grabbed her camera. The hummingbird, now her friend, led her to her nest where she was introduced to her newborn bird. The photographs of the baby and mother together are heart-melting. I couldn’t help but think of Genesis 1:21, “So God created…every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.”  (My own thought, no Scriptures are mentioned in the book.)

The story proceeds with baby bird’s development, the mother’s care and feeding of the bird, and finally, its eventual independence. Interspersed are thoughts and lessons learned by the author as she progressed through this project.

As much as I loved the photography and the overall story idea, I was equally disappointed by the New Age point of view. The author references the Universe, nature, the Sun-Spirit, the Supreme Intelligence, and “however we choose to label it.” At one point, she prays to nature and to a dead saint, but never to the living God of the Holy Bible. Christian readers will likely find passages such as these to be disturbing. On the other hand, for non-believers or those who like New Age thinking, the book is a total delight and a perfect gift book.

Noelle M. Meade-Izzi enjoys nature photography and is a professional graphic designer. A segment of the book was chosen by the U.S. Humane Society to feature in its publication, “All Animals.”
