“Allow me to say it again: the Creator of the heavens, the earth and all therein owes us nothing! However, on the flip side, we owe God absolutely everything!” Yolanda Shanks exclaims in her second of the Destined to Live Despite Me series, A Cause to Be Thankful.

At one hundred and ten pages, this paperback book is the author’s uplifting and encouraging study on being thankful, no matter what has happened to you. Targeted toward those who are depressed or considering suicide, the book could be read by any one interesting in looking toward God for peace, contentment and mercy. Using the King James Version of the Bible, it is Christian-based, promoting both Old and New Testament references.

In seven chapters, Shanks blends Scripture, thoughts, experiences, prayers, notes to readers and boxes with highlighted statements to get the readers’ attention to stop focusing on entitlement with a “me, mine and my” perspective but to concentrate on God, His love, redemption and purpose in our lives.

Starting with the definition of thankfulness being an expression of gratitude, a gift or favor, she says it involves at least two parties – the benefactor and the recipient. When we show our thankfulness, we recognize appreciation and acceptance.

Relating to her past of a teenage pregnancy that produced separation, isolation and confinement along with a later attempted suicide until she found Christ, she dissects and describes the Biblical story in the book of Luke of Jesus healing the ten lepers.

Reiterating how ten sick men were healed by Christ completely but only one returned to thank God, she breaks the verses down to observation, interpretation and application to use in our daily lives that promote being thankful.

Like someone with leprosy, we must learn to leave our comfort zone and reach out to others to rid ourselves of sin that envelopes us. In doing so, we can become more like Him and genuinely acknowledge and appreciate both God and others.

Although there are spontaneous breaks in the flow of writing with needed prayer and thoughts, Shanks goes into specifics about this miracle of Jesus as she correlates Old Testament prophesies to New Testament fulfillment and how they confirm that God freely forgives us. We all need to continually focus on to going back and thanking God for our healing which will, in turn, open us up to be grateful to others.
