Norm Goldman, Publisher & Editor of Bookpleasures.com Interviews A.J. Aaron Author of Reluctant Gods

Bookpleasures today is pleased to have as our guest A.J. Aaron author of Reluctant Gods (The First of the Reluctant Gods series).

Good day A.J. and thanks for participating in our interview.

Norm:

Please tell our readers a little bit about your personal and professional background.

A.J.

Good day Norm. Thanks for having me. I was schooled as a Mechanical Engineer At WPI in Worcester Massachusetts. I spent 33 years in manufacturing holding numerous jobs including plant engineer and lastly as a consultant to multiple plants for profit improvement. Now I consult privately part time, and write full time. I enjoy visiting my grown up kids, skiing, reading and writing.

Norm:

How did you get started in writing?

A.J.

It all started when I had a series of paranormal events. It didn't fit any of my paradigms, being trained as a pragmatic engineer, so I had to investigate if these things were possible, or I was going insane. The research got me into the subjects of the physics of consciousness, telepathy, magick, witchcraft, quantum physics, chakras and a whole host of areas. I felt I had to write my story of what happened to me, and that was my first attempt at writing with the book, A New Reality - A Wake up Call to Life's Mysteries.

Norm:

How did you decide you were ready to write Reluctant Gods?

A.J.

When I wrote the first book I met a producer/director that felt I should write a script and base it on the novel. When I did so, I experienced the freedom of writing fiction and thoroughly enjoyed the process. It was at that point that I decided I wanted to do more fiction writing so I asked, "What if all the things I learned about were possible to do for normal folks?" Well that led to Reluctant Gods. A pragmatic male engineer and high powered woman executive are put in the situation of having previously unknown powers as gods might have.

Norm:

Why have you been drawn to writing fantasy? As a follow up, are there aesthetic advantages and disadvantages peculiar to fantasy?

A.J.

Fantasy allows for many more freedoms for the characters than other genres. Magical powers being one of them. Unfortunately, most fantasy novels today are pretty much the same. I wanted to make something different that crossed over genres with humor, some romance, mystery and so on.

Norm:

What would you say is the best reason to recommend someone to read Reluctant Gods and what served as the primary inspiration for the book?

A.J.

Pure pleasure. The primary inspiration was to create a world that my readers could enter that would take them away from the mundane and into the fantastic. It had to make them feel as many emotions as possible and allow them to be in the scene themselves.

Norm:

How did you go about creating the characters of Sevilen Decarain, his one hundred six-year old grandmother, Ninee Aysel and his girl friend, Leyna DiAmore? As a follow up, who is your favorite character in your book and why?

A.J.

I have to laugh when I think of all of them. They've become my friends and I almost expect to meet them all one day. Every one of them is some sort of a conglomerate of people I've known but they each took on their own personalities as the story progressed and they did things that I didn't expect. I know that sounds strange but the characters become their own creation.

As far as a favorite? As much as Sevilen didn't like Leyna at the beginning, I got the most fun from her. Tegwin arrives on the scene along with Tristan (Satan), his wife Lillith, and the demon Seth in the second book, "Reluctant Gods II- The Demon Seth." Tegwin became a very interesting character as well. Another highly intelligent, beautiful and powerful woman.

Norm:

Was writing the book improvisational, or did you have a set plan?

A.J.

It's funny. I recently read Stephen King's book on writing and he wrote through a similar process that I did; put two people in a room with a problem and let the characters write the book. I had a plot to start with but the characters really changed the whole thing and wrote the book themselves as they came to life.

Norm:

Did you learn anything from writing your book and what was it?

A.J.

Yes - you can't edit enough. It's the hard part of writing. Getting the story flowing is easy when it's going on but then the devil is in the details as they say.

Norm:

What books have most influenced your life?

A.J.

I fell in love with reading with Anne Rice's vampire and witches series. Carlos Castaneda, Richard Bach, Khalil Gibran and many other writers that employed knowledge outside of the mainstream were influential as well. The research I did for "A New Reality" really opened my eyes to another world that exists within ours and those books had a tremendous impact on how I look at things now and what I write.

Norm:

Where can our readers find out more about you and Reluctant Gods?

A.J.

On Amazon of course and I also have a WEBSITE that has the resources used in writing my books and links to the music that plays in them.

Norm:

As this interview draws to a close what one question would you have liked me to ask you? Please share your answer.

A.J.

Thanks for asking that Norm. "Who would enjoy my books?" would be the question. Anyone with an open mind looking for something outside of the normal everyday world. If you only want vanilla, that is, if you are locked into a rigid perception of the world, you need to read someone else.

Norm:

Thanks once again and good luck with Reluctant Gods.

A.J.

Thanks for having me Norm and have a great day!
