If you are willing to use your time, your efforts, your resources (limited or unlimited), you can be a walking-on-water miracle to another person. From there, it may grow into affecting an entire community,” Caroline Barnett shares in her book, Willing to Walk on Water – Step Out in Faith and Let God Work Miracles through Your Life.

This two hundred and thirty-seven page paperback book has a photograph of a woman stepping mid-air out of a boat onto a sea of water. Geared toward volunteering and outreach ministries, it is targeted to mainly Christians who want to learn more about ways they can be a part of helping others. Using mostly the New Living Translation of the Holy Bible, A.J. Gregory assists with the writing. At the end of the book, there are acknowledgments, a chapter-by-chapter discussion guide, notes and authors’ biographies.

Caroline Barnett was born and raised around volunteering and has made it her passionate journey since the age of eighteen to help the needy through life. Married to Pastor Matthew Barnett, they run the Dream Center in Los Angeles, California where they started with two hundred different ministries and now feed over fifty thousand people every month. With several lists, the author suggests ways to help the homeless, the hungry, the elderly or single mom, those in foster care, the drug addict or the prostitute.

Similar to a missionary speaking at a church service, this book explains the ins and outs of volunteering at the Dream Center and how it evolved and expanded through the years. With her own professional and personal experiences noted, the book includes many stories and testimonials of people who worked at or were rescued by their foundation.

Referencing Peter walking to Jesus on water, Moses forty years in the desert, King David’s sin with Bathsheba and other Biblical characters, Barnett believes all of us need to be willing to help the brokenness in the world. With roadblocks, lies, insecurities, doubts and fears stopping us from sacrificing personally, professionally and emotionally, she gives suggestions to trigger one’s calling by establishing priorities, eliminating unnecessary demands, taking time for yourself and finding balance to volunteer.

With the number one issue today in needy people’s lives being their environment, we can take small steps to come to their aid and expand to others in need. The number one reason not to step out in faith and help them is that we feel unworthy of God’s grace. We must pursue our purpose and have a committed heart first to God to listen when He asks us to be willing to walk on water to Him. The author recommends that if you start your day with God’s hope and end with His peace, you will not sink. As Barnett reiterates, “it’s time to get out of the boat.”
