With no profanity and only little physical romantic contact such as kissing and touching, the book is geared toward young female women or those interested in the medical field, child services and search and rescue teams. There are two pages of reviews, mainly by authors, at the beginning of the book and an eleven question discussion guide for book club or small group meetings at the end. With minor Christian beliefs and relationships, this reader wishes all pronouns related to God were capitalized for reverence.
Ever avoiding her past, Kate Callison is again struggling at her next job position in several months, this time as interim director of the emergency department at Austin’s Grace Hospital. Unable to deal with broken memories and a ruined relationship with her father, she tries ardently to follow in the footsteps of the prior director who has been missing for six months.
When Wes Tanner, a drill digger who works on the community’s search and rescue team, meets Kate, he finds her to be prickly, sad and self-determined as she fails to lead or blend in with the hospital’s team. He, too, has memories he prefers forgotten and buried.
However, after the two of them are involved in trying to save a newborn baby left in a hospital bathroom, they start to see each other in a more revealing light. Since Texas has the “Safe Haven” law regarding the abandonment of infants, Kate, Wes and others have to put their emotions and anger aside to deal with the tragedy when the local newspaper’s opinion page repeatedly scolds the hospital about their handling of the matter.
Will Kate move on from her sad past and reconnect with her father? Will Wes learn the truth and forgive? Will others at the hospital find peace and gratification for jobs well done? Will the sense of abandonment turn to a rescued relationship in more than one individual? In this well-done medical thriller that includes romance and heartbreak, Calvert knows how to raise the reader’s blood pressure to get attention.
