As we raise our children in the Lord, we teach them and train them and pray that they will share our faith and stay strong as they become adults. But our job is not finished when our children grow up,” Crystal Bowman writes in her introduction of her children’s book, My Grandma & Me.

At sixty pages, this hardbound over-sized book has a drawing of a grandmother having tea with two young children on the front cover. With “rhyming devotions for you and your grandchild,” it includes three pages on how to use the book, twenty-five devotions with four “passing down the faith” pages targeted to promote a spiritual bond between a grandmother and her grandchildren. There are simple yet expressive illustrations by Katherine Kirkland on every other page. This reader wishes all pronouns related to God were capitalized for reverence.

Broken down into a devotional format, the opened pages have a topic and Bible verse listed with a drawing under it on the left side of the page. On the right side, there is usually a two stanza rhyme at the top half of the page with a song or short prayer on the bottom half.

Promoting themes such as God caring and loving a young child to learning about not being worried or afraid or being happy, saying thank you and telling others about Jesus, one can read one a day or many based on the child’s understanding. With the simplistic rhyming format, a preschooler can easily remember the verses or poems.

One example is “God Keeps His Promises” listing the verse in Psalms 145:13 “The LORD always keeps his promises.” The rhyme states, “God promises to be with you, to care for you and help you too. God promises that when you pray, he’ll listen to each word you say. God promises to be your friend. His love for you will never end. He’ll keep his promises to you. That’s what the Bible says he’ll do.” There is a song to sing to the tune of “Mary Had a Little Lamb” that says, “Thank you for your promises, promises, promises – all the special promises you give to me each day. Lord, I love your promises, promises, promises. Lord, I love your promises. Thank you, Lord, I pray.”

As an author of over seventy children books, Bowman does an excellent job being succinct and to the point in easy-to-understand verbiage of her poems, songs and prayers. This is a wonderful book to have at home when grandkids visit, read over the telephone or do video chat so our children learn to love God with all their heart at an early age.

This book was furnished by Tyndale for review purposes.
