Cooper Moon: The Temptation, the second book in a trilogy by Cheryl Shireman, takes the reader back to Timber Lake where we first met Mr. Cooper Moon, former womanizer, now God-fearing pastor, his loving wife Sally, and the rest of the intriguing cast of characters we got to know in this small town.

The story opens with an assortment of misunderstandings. Sally thinks one of the waitresses at her diner, Lucy, wrote the seductive note she found in Cooper’s pocket. The note was signed by “L.” But the note wasn’t from Lucy—even though she does have a crush on Cooper—it was from Libby, a beautiful seductress and one of Cooper’s former lovers. Libby is determined to get Cooper back, and she’s certain she’s going to make it happen. Unbeknown to her, Cooper has no intention of ever cheating on his wife again now that he’s found God and built a church.

Frank, the banker, is bribing Cooper; only Cooper thinks the letter is from Frank’s wife Violette, another former lover. Simultaneously, Frank offers Cooper’s wife Sally a loan from the bank so she can buy the diner where she works. Frank has ulterior motives. He plans to steal Sally away from Cooper, as revenge.

When I first read the details of Frank’s loan offer to Sally, I said, “Hey, that’s not legal.” Having worked in the mortgage industry for over a decade myself, I knew what he was doing was wrong. But I only had to read a bit more to discover that the author had not made a mistake. Frank was, indeed, working outside the law—having just been fired from the bank. I won’t spoil the details, but it’s clever, intriguing, and hilarious.

The town cop, Jake, is trying to figure out how to undo a mistake he made in the first Cooper Moon book. Jake deeply regrets picking up the bag of drug money while he and his partner were conducting a drug bust. As it turns out, unloading a large sum of illegal cash without getting caught isn’t easy.

Could all of this realistically happen? That’s a valid question one might ask. And the answer is an emphatic, “Yes!” With this cast of characters that Cheryl Shireman has so expertly and thoroughly developed, yes, indeed, all of this would—and must—happen.

I highly recommend reading the first book in the series, Cooper Moon: The Calling, prior to this one, because the reader will have a better understanding of the characters, including what motivates them and why they make certain choices.

I loved every minute reading this novel. It is nonstop entertainment. When the story ends, there are enough lose ends to make reading the third book mandatory. I can’t wait!
