“I think that at my age, that I have one message,” explained elderly Billy Graham once. “And that is that Jesus Christ came, He died on a cross, He rose again. And He asks us to repent for our sins and receive Him by faith as Lord and Savior. And if we do, we have forgiveness of sins.” This is the core foundation of the tributes in Chicken Soup for the Soul’s Billy Graham & Me, compiled by Steve Posner and Amy Newmark.
With one hundred and one inspiring stories from those that personally know the world’s most famous evangelist of our era, this four hundred and three page hardbound book is dedicated to the iconic American preacher. There is a forward by A. Larry Ross, an introduction by Steve Posner and a final word from the ninety-four year old missionary along with over forty photographs in both black and white or color format.
Among the contributors listed in alphabetical order are not only relatives like his children, grandchildren, sister and nephew, but range from American presidents, a vice president, a U.S. representative and a foreign prime minister to preachers, rabbis and an archbishop to authors, CEOs, television actors and commentators or journalists along with a NASCAR racer, golfer, and Heisman Trophy winner to name a few.
Having given his “crusade” speech to over two point two billion listeners over seventy years, Graham refused to speak to the 1960’s segregated crowd and was the first to penetrate the Iron Curtain in the 1970s. With such a consistent, reliable and commitment to God belief system, over a hundred personal stories could easily be included that range from two to five pages in length.
Between tales of quick, innocuous introductions that made life-long impacts to decades of deep personal and intimate relationships, friends and acquaintances such as Pat Boone, Bill Clinton, Phil Ehart, Kathie Lee Gifford, Mike Huckabee, Henry Kissinger, Sam Nunn, Luis Palau, Michael Reagan, Cal Thomas, J.C. Watts and Ravi Zacharias tell their own cherished connection to the humble, dedicated Christian man.
As one reads the myriad of short stories by well-known people, a pattern is immediately noticed that shows how Graham gives God the due glory and honor with his humility, integrity, authenticity and love, even though they are written through the eyes of the recipient, not the man himself. The book is a wonderful accolade to the man who says, “I am not a great man, but I serve a great God.
