Millie & Honey is a delightful series about 14-year old Millie and her beloved Collie-Lab mix, Honey. Honey is the mother of four spunky puppies. The story opens with Millie and her dogs setting out for a day at the lake when they come upon a surprise. In the clearing sets a shiny oval object the size of a minivan.

Upon closer examination, they discover it is an instantaneous interplanetary traveling machine. In charge is a lovely woman wearing a sparkly dress, Rose. Rose invites Millie and the dogs for an adventure. The cost? Only one penny, which is exactly what Millie can afford.

The rest of the book details the joys of their adventure to a Disneyland-like planet called Catatonia, which is run by wonderful kitty-cats.

I love reading the story behind a story, and in the case of Millie & Honey, there’s a good one. When author J.D. Means and his wife moved from Ohio to Dubai, U.A.E, they were separated from their beloved pets for a month. This separation was agonizing for Mrs. Means, so to cheer up his wife, J.D. wrote Millie & Honey.

Volume II is a continuation of the delightful story. In this book, Millie’s parents accompany her and the dogs on another interplanetary adventure. This time, they go to a planet called Appleopolis. Here they experience thought communication with all the elements of nature, including the apple trees, sun, and grass. They learn how an apple press works and how to pick cinnamon. Again, it’s a world that is a cross between heaven and Disneyland.

My favorite thing about the Millie & Honey series is that it is truly G-rated. There are no monsters, villains, or evil enemies. There is nothing to frighten readers, so parents can read chapters as bedtime stories to young ones, if desired.

The illustrations throughout are a wonderful enhancement to the stories and are sure to be loved by young readers.
