Norm Goldman, Publisher & Editor of Bookpleasures.com Interviews Harry Rice Author of Killer Pappas

Today, Norm Goldman Publisher & Editor of Bookpleasures.com is pleased to have as our guest Harry Rice author of Killer Pappas.

Good day Harry and thanks for participating in our interview

Norm:

Please tell our readers a little bit about your personal and professional background.

Harry:

I was a foundling, adopted when I was about three years old into a dysfunctional family. Despite a psychologically painful childhood with an alcoholic mother, I received a good liberal arts education and developed a sense of humor that has kept me relatively sane. I was a teacher for over forty years at the secondary and college levels, specializing in social studies and history and the teaching of those subjects. I loved teaching. My doctoral dissertation was an historical biography of an American abolitionist. I had an epiphany, a mini-satori when I was nineteen which has influenced me throughout my life. I am interested in many topics: politics, boxing, baseball, philosophy, spirituality to name a few.

Norm:

What inspired you to write Killer Pappas?

Harry:

The nucleus of the novel just came to me, a gift of the Universe. I thought I might like to write a novel and the basic idea just came and flowered.

Norm:

What purpose do you believe your story serves and what matters to you about the story?

Harry:

I became interested in boxing but in the novel it was just the vehicle through which the protagaonist was able to conquer his demons and come to an understanding of who he really was. The novel is really about this awakening spiritually and sexually and there is a strong hope that it will influence others to do likewise.

Norm:

Did you write the story to express something you believe or was it just for entertainment?

Harry:

The story is what the Universe wants to tell the world. It uses this body-mind organism to do that. Mainly it seems to want to inform not entertain, but there is the hope that the story is interesting.

Norm:

What was your main focus when you created your protagonist Zack?

Harry:

I didn't create Zack although the character does mirror beliefs, values and experiences of this apparent self trying to understand itself.

Norm:

Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?

Harry:

The novel is pointing to what many readers do not want to hear: particularly the non-existence of a separate autonomous self, the understanding that volition is an illusion, that there is no entity what authors its behavior. Some will not want to deal with the notion of a healthy gay man. I am obviously an advocate of gay liberation.

Norm:

What was one of the most surprising things you learned in writing Killer Pappas?

Harry:

That so many ideas were struggling in this bond-mind to be released to the world.

Norm:

How has your education informed your writing?

Harry:

My education has formed an openness at the core of this supposed entity and provided a channel through which liberating ideas can be expressed.

Norm:

Do you have a local writing community or fellow writers that you look to for support and advice?

Harry:

No, not writers, but there are many spiritual groups on the internet with whom I communicate.

Norm:

How can readers find out more about you and your endeavors?

Harry:

Anyone can email me at haribridgerama@gmail.com with personal communications which I would love to receive. Also I have a recently-started BLOG where any topic arising from the novel or anywhere else can be discussed. I also have an active facebook page under my name and receive messages on Twitter @harryrice3

Norm:

What is next for Harry Rice?

Harry:

I have thought about writing a memoir, but it's only a thought. I want to spend a lot more time reading, and going to the theatre and the movies.“Killer Pappas” is my first and last novel unless the Universe decides that this eighty year old body-mind should do otherwise.

Norm:

Thanks once again and good luck with all of your future endeavors
