In this age of email and text, a handwritten, heartfelt letter has become a unique treasure. No one understands that better than Lynette M. Smith, author of How to Write Heartfelt Letters to Treasure. When her son was planning his wedding, he and his bride crafted special letters honoring each of their parents. Then they read and presented them to their parents at their wedding reception. This event inspired Smith to initiate a movement for spreading love and kindness through ink-on-paper letters, which she hopes will spread to millions of people worldwide.

Lynette M. Smith is a professional editor and the owner of AllMyBest.com and GoodWaysToWrite.com

Part 1 starts off with the basics: how to plan, write, package, and present your letter. Then, if desired, let your imagination take your message to the next level. For instance, you might video record yourself reading the letter, add original art, or even a song.

Part 2 covers every special occasion. Here you’ll pick up outstanding ideas. For example, if your father is having a birthday, you can reminisce about some of your favorite times together and express appreciation for the time your dad spent with you. Every occasion—from graduation to honoring a Veteran to anniversaries of all types—is covered here. There are even suggestions for what not to say and what to say for that most difficult occasion of all: the death of a loved one.

Valentine’s Day is one of the most celebrated holidays. Smith suggests that giving a personal, handwritten letter means so much more than giving one of those a mass-produced cards or even a bouquet of flowers. I have to agree.

Part 3 is about turning an event into something really special. This is for those times when you want to say thank you to a teacher, mentor, or coach. Or when you need to express appreciation to someone in business.

One of the most essential parts of this book is the chapter on mending a torn relationship. Personally, I wish the individual who sent me an offensive letter to “apologize” had read this book first. This chapter alone is worth the price of purchase.

My favorite part of the book is the Appendix. Here you’ll find lists of words to use in letters to specific types of individuals as well as inspirational quotes you can use.

If you’re the type of person who stares at a blank page and can’t think of how to start, Lynette M. Smith has got you covered. “Great Beginnings to Jumpstart Your Sentences” will get your letter off to a speedy start.

In summation,  How to Write Heartfelt Letters to Treasure is a fantastic resource that belongs on everyone’s bookshelf. I expect to reach for it over and over again.
