E e – is for eat. Rocky likes to eat with his friends, Canela and Bella. Do you like to eat with your friends?”

E e – Eat en espanol es comer. Rocky le gusta comer con sus amigas, Canela y Bella. ?A tit e gusta comer con tus amigos o amigas?”

M.U. Salas-Tristan has written a photographic bilingual children’s activity book titled Rocky’s ABC Book with His Friends. This unnumbered but thirty-six page hardbound book has nine photographs of small animals against a bright lemon yellow background on the front cover and a photograph of the author with her beloved pets on the back cover.  All English wording is in black ink at the top of each lemon-yellow bordered page with the same interpretation in Spanish in red ink at the bottom. Each letter of the alphabet is dedicated to a full page with a color photograph and there are two cut-out bookmarks in both languages at the back of the book that have the word of each letter on the back.

Rambunctious Rocky is a light brown male Chihuahua who has seven friends, some are dogs, others are cats and there are even rabbits and a parrot. With each letter of the alphabet, Rocky is usually photograph by himself, with his friends or only the friends, showing something related to the letter on the page. Whether it is blue for B showing him in his blue vest, ice cream for I showing him eating his favorite treat or napping for N showing Rocky and Canela’s puppies sleeping, the animals have fun while one is shown the alphabet in both dialects.

The reader can view Canela, another cute canine, mothering her three puppies, Delilah, Daisy and Diana, or dark brown Bella eating her vegetables and Zorro wearing adorable, playful costumes. The reader should not forget to notice Paquito the loud parrot, Tomy the stubborn cat or the fluffy rabbits, Snowball and Domino.

This is a great educational tool to have in the bookcase for those starting to not only learn their alphabet and reading, but to see and understand another language written on each page. Although the font is sometimes hard to read, each page asks the reader some type of question about the topic it shows, drawing the reader into the book. This is a good book to read to a young child who loves to look at pictures while listening.
