In the Bible, Jesus told his disciples in John 15:14 “Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.” Wally Armstrong makes this verse a personal reminder to have Jesus as his constant friend in his book, Practicing the Presence of Jesus.

This one hundred and twelve page, hardbound, pocket-book size book has a photograph of an empty wooden chair in a field at sunrise on the front cover. On the back cover are several paragraphs about the book, a review and author biography. There is are six reviews inside along with a two page forward by Ken Blanchard and preface. The book is geared toward Christian men but can be appreciated and understood by all Christians or those trying to comprehend a personal relationship with God. There are highlighted comments in green and simple chair drawings throughout the book for emphasis. This reader wishes all pronouns regarding God would be capitalized for reverence.

The author is a professional golfer who has had a personal relationship with Jesus Christ for over thirty-five years but for the last seven plus years has had a yearning to get to know Him better. After receiving a book published in 1929 that recommended ways to get closer to God, Armstrong found his answer and changed his thinking.

Being performance-driven, focused and feeling that something was missing, Armstrong relates his relationship to Jesus through his golfing experiences. When at the Masters in Augusta, he was told “Jesus” was in the crowd, only to realize it was an actor. In conjunction with the old book’s suggestions, he realized that if he visualizes Jesus actually being next to him, seated in a chair, he could see, speak to and engage in a loving relationship with a true Friend. This idea catapulted into considering Jesus is in the car with him, at the driving range, beside him every early morning during his daily devotions and with him always. The writer says you can practice Jesus’ presence by meeting, walking and sharing Him in your everyday life.

With Jesus as our best Friend, we can tell Him everything and hear His guidance through our daily lives. The book promotes making Christ our best Friend and Confidant. Psalms 111:10 says “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom …” and perhaps this book will give a reader the fear and wisdom to grow closer in his or her walk with our awesome, almighty God.
