With over two thirds of American adults over twenty five overweight or obese, we truly need to lose weight! Deborah Kesten, M.P.H. and Larry Scherwitz, Ph.D. have written Make Weight Loss Last: 10 Solutions That Nourish Body, Mind, and Soul for the specific purpose of life-changing attitudes and eating habits instead of typical dieting.

This two hundred and fifty-four page softbound book depicts five silhouettes of a woman’s weight loss stages against a red background on the front cover and three paragraphs about the book along with the authors’ biographies and photographs on the back cover. Besides a short introduction, there are twenty-two pages of references, two pages of acknowledgments, nine pages of index and two pages about the authors. No misspellings were noticed but some page set-up, fonts and spacing issues were. The book is targeted to men and women who want to lose weight and stay healthy without dieting.

In this updated edition, married couple Kesten and Scherwitz do not write about the usual diet to lose weight theory. Instead they hone in on seven problem areas including food fretting, task snacking, emotional eating, fast fooding, solo dining and sensory disregard when it comes to trying to lose weight and keep it off.  Using personal profile questionnaires for each of these areas, one can determine concentration zones to improve their own health, losing pounds in the process.

In addition to explaining current common diets and their pitfalls, the two authors dissect why we eat, how we eat, how it affects us when we eat and where we can change for the better. Through pre-contemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, maintenance, and relapse, we can give up the stereo-typical diet way of thinking and eat, feel and weigh healthier.

By changing the negative seven “new-normal” patterns to positive ones by using jettison judgment, focusing on healthy nutrition by accessing your appetite and eating fresh, unprocessed foods that are designed by design with family and friends along with sleeping and exercising more, one will undoubtedly weigh less.

This book does not pamper to the regimented calorie counting and food recipes (only two were listed) but concentrates on the complete whole of body, soul, and mind working together to our advantage. It reads like a medical instructional manual instead of a quick-fix, diet until you starve to death, unrealistic fantasy. For once, here is an accurate, practical way to look at food, our eating habits and how we perceive ourselves when we eat as we shed unwanted and unnecessary pounds.
