The Adventures of Summer McPhee of Ocracoke Island: The Midnight Skulker by Douglas Quinn caters to young girls, age eight to twelve years old, but can be enjoyed by either sex or age group. Similar to his Boy Detective series, this is a fast, easy-to-read tome that is also based in Ocracoke Village, North Carolina.

This one hundred and fifteen page paperback book has a cut-out beach scene with a photograph of a fun-loving girl wearing a sideways baseball cap on the front jacket. On the back are three paragraphs about the book with no reviews, author biography or author photograph. Inside, each chapter beginning has the same photograph as the cover but in black and white. The ending of the book has listings of other children series of books available by the author. There were no misspellings, grammar or punctuation errors but the word “mother” sometimes had capitalization issues (pages 3, 35, 89, 91and 97).

In this fun story, young Summer hears gossip from her friend, Angie, that Missy had stolen and worn Carla’s clothes and was to be charged by the sheriff for theft. Not believing the rumor and with her mother’s approval, Summer decides to confront Missy directly about the stolen property. While visiting Missy’s home in a trailer park, Summer gets mistakenly yelled at by Missy’s mom who thinks Summer is mean and trying to cause more problems. When Summer finally gets to talk to Missy, she learns that Missy found the clothes with other strange articles in a nearby cemetery.

After checking out the cemetery herself, Summer decides to ask Sheriff Caswell to look into the incidence and when he goes to see Missy and her mom, there is an argument and the mother is arrested. Summer begs her mom to be responsible for Missy for a few days and Missy comes to stay at their house. That night Angie and Summer go to the cemetery and videotape the true culprit who steals things. After explaining it to Summer’s mom and Missy, the next day the sheriff is surprised watching the tape of the thief and drops all charges against Missy and releases her mom.

This is a great story because it shows that friendship, trust, and telling the truth have value and can help others when there are problems. It is a great book for young children of both sexes to learn about dealing with gossip, rumors and meanness by others and how to react. Books like this that promote human kindness would make a great series.
