The Whittaker Family Reunion is about to take place, and Martha Whittaker is eager to have her sons home again. While the preparations are being made, two of her children are making their way home to St. Louis. Abraham, the kind slave doctor from the South has begun his journey when he's interrupted by a strange encounter which forces him to question everything in his life up to that point. Ezekiel, the strong-headed ladies man, is making his way from the family estate in England after an encounter of his own. Meanwhile, tending his St. Louis farm with wife and three children, is Isaac the man with dark eyes and a kind smile.

The youngest of the family, Anna is a beautiful blond teen, filled with angst, and to everyone on the outside, a spoiled unruly little wretch of a girl. Causing her parents nothing but worry and despair, she plots and plans with the help of her lovesick best friend. What she doesn't know is that the mistakes of a young girl may be much more.

As the family gathers once again, the three sons find themselves thinking often of the past; a father who was cold, abusive and deceitful. As they work to push away painful childhood memories, a stranger in the woods threatens to tear apart their happy family once and for all. With the help of their callous and  unknowing little sister, he may succeed.

I found The Whittaker Family Reunion to be an intense, yet somehow elegant thrill ride from beginning to end. Author Shirley A. Roe so precisely introduces her characters, that one feels in the very moment; on the ship with Zeke, the farm with Isaac, and longing to be the savior to so many with Abraham. As the plot thickens, you find yourself not only excited about the next page to come, but wanting to be a part of the Whittaker family. This was a fantastic edge-of-your-seat read, and I absolutely cannot wait for the next book!
