Readers could easily dismiss New Page Books Activate Joy: Live Your Life Beyond Limitations as just another New Age book that spouts all the same Aquarian philosophies you’ve been hearing over the years from Shirley MacLaine to Marilyn Ferguson. Some readers may even pass on buying the book from Amazon if they use the “click to look inside” function and preview page 18, where author AlixSandra Parness reveals that she spent many years channeling a dolphin. “Through many years of channeling a dolphin called Ouna, I learned about the energetic system of our physical bodies we call the chakra system. She awakened ancient knowledge and infinite wisdom that became the foundation for much of what I would teach in later years.” Tossing the book aside would be unfortunate because the book radiates a feel-good energy, in and of itself a good thing in these tough times.

The back of the book reveals that the author has developed a reputation in these later years as an ordained minister, doctor of divinity, trained clairvoyant healer, and dedicated teacher. She is the founder of the Inner Focus Church and the Inner Focus Advanced Energy Healing School, an international vehicle for attaining enlightenment and world peace. There’s even a color picture of her.

This is all well and good, but readers may wonder, what’s in it for me if I buy this book? Inside, readers will discover that the author points the way down a vibrant, new path to finding joy in life. She has fresh and original ideas, exercises, and techniques that may be of value to some people. She teaches how to transition from despair to joy in the most challenging situations, to access peace in the midst of conflict, and to make choices that result in true joy and fulfillment. Certainly, these are messages that the world needs now more than ever. Activate Joy unfolds as a nicely packaged work splendidly written with excellent grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and spelling. Early on at page 30, the author presents her Joy Flow Formula:

Excitement and good feelings create the energy of passion.

Passion creates new thought forms.

Thought forms create attitude.

Attitude is your point of attraction that brings forth your experience.

This theology was written in the Bible more than 2,000 years ago in James 1:2-4 “Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.”

The press material for this book mentions “the author’s connection with the realms of divine love,” so we have to examine this closely. The author digs into this on page 145 with a section called “Understanding the Idea of Channeling.” Among true Christians, spiritism has always been considered rebellion and idolatry equal to witchcraft. Because none of this leads to the true God but is experimentation in the fallen human nature and the spirit realm that we are ill equipped to venture in, God warns us to stay away from spiritism for our own protection. “Regard not them that have familiar spirits, neither seek after wizards, to be defiled by them: I am the LORD your God." (Leviticus 19.31). Nevertheless, the author delves deeply into spiritism and spends much of the book trying to persuade readers to follow her.

Cognitive Behavior Therapy probably reached a flash point with Norman Vincent Peale’s The Power of Positive Thinking, which was first published in 1952 after World War II, gave optimism to a post-war culture, and began the self-help book genre. Peale’s monumental book encourages the reader to use positive thinking to live a richer and more rewarding life, and his work has been copied in various ways many times since. AlixSandra Parness often echoes his teachings, especially with The Law of Attraction, and going from negative failures to positive successes.

On page 225 at the back of the book, some of the most beneficial content spreads out over many pages. The author encourages readers to repeat Power Blessings in order to live your life beyond limitations. Some of them are worth cutting out and posting somewhere so that you can run through them often. Everyone will have their favorite depending on their current needs, but these wise passages alone are worth the price of the book. Anything that can help you stay optimistic while the world seems to teeter on the brink of disaster is basically good, we just have to be careful that our foothold reaches solid ground.

The Bible warns all of us to beware of false teachers in 1 Timothy 4:1-5. “Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons . . . .” Since many people believe we are in the End Times, we should be doubly wary. On page 155, the author admits that she “never really bought into the full package religion thrusts upon us,” and she calls herself an “irreverent Reverend,” so readers must ultimately take Parness’ writings for what they are: a heartfelt collection of positive affirmations lovingly stirred into a bright, upbeat concoction that caters to the needs of those sincerely seeking support with a New Age twist.
