Could you tell our readers something about yourself and why and how did you get started with your BookMarketingBuzzBlog?
I have been in book
publishing since graduating college in 1989. I thought I would be a
journalist – I love to write – but discovered my calling is book
publishing. For the past dozen years I have worked for Planned
Television Arts , the nation’s largest book
As their chief marketing officer I work closely with many authors and publishers and manage teams of publicists. My Blog grew out of my 20+ years of experience and ideas. I had been reluctant to do it at first, thinking it would be a big time suck, but I realize it is well worth it. I enjoy sharing my ideas, views, and resources with my readers. The obok publishing community is no longer to be found only in the bookstore or library; – it is now online around the world.
What is book marketing and book publicity and why are they important?
Book publicity is the act
of getting news media coverage for your book – being interviewed on
radio or television; having your book reviewed online by a blogger;
or speaking to a reporter at a magazine, newswire or newspaper. Publicity drives our world and books are no different. There are
literally nearly 3,000 new titles published every single day of the
year. They each compete, in some way, for mindshare and shelf space.
Book marketing is what one does to sell their book – speak before an organization, do a bookstore signing, send direct mailers or emails to targeted to those who are potential readers, etc. Book marketing is becoming more important than book publicity – though both are linked together. authors and publishers struggle to find new, cost-effective ways to sell their books and I enjoy leading the conversation in this area.
What sites do you frequent on-line to share experiences or information?
I reader PW Daily and Publishers Lunch regularly. I also read five daily newspapers, off line. One day I might get an ipad but I still prefer paper in my hands.
What do you think of the new Internet market for writers?
It changes daily and is exciting, frustrating, and rewarding. I see many more changes in store for us in the next few years. Few things are really settled. You notice how much change takes place and it is boggling, given the industry is very resistant to change. Most noticeably, more ebooks are sold now, more books are purchased online, and more books are being self-published. The big publishers will eventually have to brand themselves and sell directly to consumers and really compete with amazon, Barnes and Noble, etc.
In the past few years or so have you seen any changes in the way publishers publish and/or distribute books? Are there any emerging trends developing?
We’ll see more of the same until some new gadget hits the market. I know that whatever we see today is not what we will see in five years. A decade ago we thought AOL, Microsoft and Yahoo! Were invincible. Now it’s Google, Facebook, and Apple. My biggest concern is the new bookstores will not replace the ones that have closed recently, such as all the Borders outlets, which will push more of publishing online in an accelerated way. We should always have a real-life, brick and mortar book community, even if it is getting smaller.
