Good day Dr. Jacobson and thanks for participating in our interview

Norm:

What motivated you to become a psychiatrist?

Dr. Jacobson:

I have been fascinated by psychology as far back as I can remember. I've always liked helping people solve their problems and communicate more effectively. When it came time to figure out what to do with my life, psychiatry was a logical extension of my inclinations and talents.

Norm:

Could you briefly tell us what is insight-oriented psychotherapy, equine-assisted psychotherapy and past life regression therapy.

Dr. Jacobson:

Insight-oriented psychotherapy is talk therapy, the purpose being to bring unconscious thoughts and motivations to consciousness. It involves the exploration of one's early childhood experiences and relationships. It utilizes transference and countertransference. The therapist makes interpretations which hopefully generate insight that leads to change.

Equine-assisted psychotherapy is an experiential form of therapy which utilizes horses. Patients engage in exercises with horses (there is no horseback riding involved) which reveal their control issues, their transactional behaviors with other people, how they deal with frustration, their boundary issues and their problem-solving abilities, among other things. After the exercises are completed, the therapist makes analogies between how the patients interacted with the horses and how the patients interacts with significant others in their lives.

The premise of past life regression therapy is that the origin of emotional and/or physical problems people have is actually in a past life as opposed to something that occurred in the patient's present lifetime. The technique involves hypnosis and oftentimes produces detailed memories of people, places and circumstances from past lives. Patients undergoing past life regressions oftentimes have a significant emotional experience which expands their spiritual awareness and provides insight into their current issues and difficulties. Interestingly enough, regardless of whether patients under past life regression hypnosis believe they are re-experiencing past lives or simply making things up, the information that they provide has rich therapeutic value.

Norm:

How did you decide you were ready to write Forgive To Win: End Self-Sabotage. Get Everything You Want?

Dr. Jacobson

I had the idea to write Forgive To Win! ten years before i published it. A lot of time was spent procrastinating and failing to put the time into completing it. When I actually applied the principles in the book to end my own self-sabotaging tendencies, I didn't have to decide if I was ready to write it or not, I simply began writing it because I was no longer getting in my own way.

Norm:

What makes your book different from the hundreds of other self-help books dealing with the same subject matter?

Dr. Jacobson

What makes Forgive To Win! different is that it systematically and effectively tackles the problem of self-sabotage which very few of the hundreds of self-help books out there do. Most of the self-help books out there are brilliant. They offer wisdom of the ages. They offer tools and techniques that work. IF you work them. Unfortunately, most people don't practice what the self-help books preach. They attempt to do so, but fail, to varying degrees, to truly apply the techniques, because of self-sabotage. So they go from one self help book to another, eternally frustrated over being unable to achieve the results offered by the self-help gurus. Forgive To Win! defines the cause of self-sabotage and provides the solution.

Norm:

Why is it difficult to change self- sabotaging habits that are self-destructive?

Dr. Jacobson:

It is difficult to eliminate self-destructive, self-sabotaging behaviors because they are generated by guilt, shame, and self-loathing deeply embedded in the subconscious mind such that no matter how hard we consciously try to succeed, we subconsciously behave in ways and make choices in our lives which impede and derail our conscious efforts. To eliminate self-sabotaging behaviors we must learn to esteem ourselves and forgive ourselves, which can only be done by unconditionally esteeming and forgiving others. This is something people are very resistant to doing which is why the change we speak of here is so difficult.

Norm:

What do you want your book to do? Whom do you believe will benefit from your book and why?

Dr. Jacobson:

I want my book to provide people with tools that will enable them to end their self-sabotaging behaviors so they can remove the roadblocks to their happiness and success. Anyone who does not have the life they desire in terms of health, wealth, career, relationships, etc. will benefit from my book because the number one reason they don't have what they want is self-sabotage which my book will enable them to eliminate.

Norm:

Do you worry about the human race?

Dr. Jacobson:

No. I don't spend time worrying about humanity. I believe we are all crawling our way up the spiritual ladder and eventually we will all get to a place of universal peace, love and cooperation.

Norm:

What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your book?

Dr. Jacobson:

Initially I thought the book represented a theory that could work. What was surprising to me was discovering that it actually did work. Self-sabotaging behaviors do go away as we get out of our egos and focus on giving, not getting.

Norm:

What are you upcoming projects?

Dr. Jacobson:

My next book is a novel based  upon the life of Albert Einstein, which has biographical, science fiction and spiritual elements intertwined in a story that focuses on Einstein's 35 year effort to discover a Unified Field Theory. It is entitled, Einstein Meets His Match.
