If you’ve read some of my previous reviews you know that I have a particular bias in favor of  books that attempt to fulfill a social function, to draw attention to  social problems and inspire readers to want to redress those and  to give voice to those members of our societies who are all too often ignored, neglected and even oppressed. I’ve said before that non-fiction can make us aware of social problems but fiction makes us care about those problems.  Naturally I was eager to read and review More Than Rice.

If you do know about the horrors of human trafficking and want to help eliminate it, this book contains a comprehensive fact sheet that includes ways to become involved and when you purchase the book, the author’s share of the proceeds go to support organizations dedicated to fighting this global problem. So purchasing the book is equal to making a donation to a worthy cause.  It would be hard to be completely unaware of the scourge of human trafficking but if you have not realized how widespread  and terrible it is and want to learn more, the fictionalized story of several victims will make it real for you on an emotional level and this might inspire you to assist in the fight to end this horrific international crime.  That was the hope behind this work of fiction.

You might ask why the author did not simply relate true stories (there are plenty of them and they are shocking)  and include statistics to get the public’s attention, but she chose fiction because in that way she can protect the privacy of the real women who inspired her effort and also because it allows her to tell a more comprehensive story, one that is a composite of many real stories. This book allows you to not only witness the horrors we all want to see ended, but to walk in the shoes of the victims and to appreciate how very important it is to do something to help them and prevent others from falling victim to the abductions and abuse that they suffered.  And of course fiction also allows the author to conjure a happy ending for a deserving character. Getting to that ending involves mystery,  intrigue and wonderfully imaginative and entertaining plot twists.  This book is a lesson in some extremely harsh realities but it is also an engrossing, entertaining and ultimately hopeful story. The author is to be commended for turning her excellent story telling skills to such good purpose.
