Norah Piehl is the Director of Communications and Development
for the Boston Book Festival. She is also an active freelance writer,
editor, and book reviewer. Her reviews, interviews, and features
appear in Publishers Weekly, BookPage, BookBrowse, The Book Report
Network, and The Horn Book, among other print and online
publications. A former children’s bookseller, Norah has also worked
in trade and academic book publishing.
Are you the life of your book group? Do you enjoy offering
opinions about books on websites like Amazon and Facebook? Would you
like to use your skills to get free books and build your freelance
writing portfolio at the same time? Book reviewing can be a great way
to break into a freelance writing career. In Norah Piehl's "Intro
to Book Reviewing" class, we’ll discuss the elements of great
book reviews, try our hands at writing book reviews for various
genres and publications, and explore the wide market for book review
writing, from traditional newspaper book pages to online book blogs.
This four-week course, which is hosted through WOW! Women on
Writing, costs only $100 and includes weekly critiques by the
instructor as well as peer reviews and an online discussion group.
The handouts are a valuable reference source, and the assignments
allow students to hone their skills and develop a portfolio at the
same time.
The most recent course started on June 10, 2011,
but you won't miss a thing if you sign up by June 15. More info and
registration are available here:
