For all you developing a paranormal headquarters in your basement or garage let this book be a warning. According to Nick Redfern there are entities out there who do not want you to investigate anything close to UFOs. I consider this to be a shame because those into ufology suffer from a great deal of skepticism to begin with, the last thing they need is the aliens themselves telling them to quit. Redfern’s subjects, as documented in what he calls case files, are men in black, MIB, most likely aliens.

Take, for example Helen, (no last name given) who claims she had recently seen a UFO and who says a man in black showed up at her door and said, “We would ask you cease your studies.” The book outlines case after case of such visits by MIB. They normally dress in dark suits and they wear dark fedoras and dark glasses. MIB appear in groups of three, unless they show up as two or one.

They never say much. They are often gaunt. Now I know this sounds like I’m describing most jazz musicians from the 1950‘s but it’s not supposed to be funny. Redfern states that these MIB are “fear-inducing figures” who bring their “unique brand of terror and intimidation” because unlike government operatives in the movie MIB, the real MIB are perhaps alien entities -- unless they are time travellers, mistaken identities, fakers, the devil, or tulpas, as considered later in the theories section of the book. I like to be responsible as a reviewer thus, if MIB do show up at your door, crack a joke.

The book says that evidently humor short circuits the MIB internal system. The book explains everything except for the wearing of tinfoil hats. Just remember to be terrified as you read. About a quarter of the way through the book there’s a grainy photograph of one MIB taken by a woman in 1968. It shows a man in requisite black outfit half hidden by a wall and looking away from the camera. The photographer says she took the picture from a car parked very near the curb, either that or the truck behind her was doing some serious tailgating. As you can tell I’m not convinced by any of this evidence. I do believe, however that inconclusiveness is one of the rules when writing this sort of work. Leave it a bit open for speculation and we want more.

The Real Men in Black the sort of book a ten year old boy might love and hopefully be terrified by. I recommend it for just that age group. But in the hopes of convincing a broader range of believers, consider these two bits of evidence: in 2008 a woman claims two MIB visited her when she was playing Frisbee with a neighborhood kid. Now get this, the Frisbee was called an Alien Flyer and it also had a alien face on it. Secondly, consider that a large number of those seeing MIB were also into divining with Ouija boards.

If you want more such evidence you need to grab a copy of The Real Men in Black. As for me, having read the book did I become more open to the possibility of aliens and MIB? Not in the least...wait a minute three darkly clad men are knocking on my door, I think my review has been discovered. If you’re reading this the good news is that I got it sent before being told to cease my studies!
