Artist Paul Klee wrote “A drawing is simply a line going for a walk.”  I like that.  But lines I have drawn over the years didn’t want to walk the way I had hoped they would.  They squiggled when they were supposed to be straight and curved when they were supposed to squiggle.  They had a life of their own. I kept trying to draw and not having had a background in art, was skeptical that any book could help me learn to draw. But, reading what prompted the author to write this book encouraged me to read his book and try his system.

John Hastings was frustrated with the drawing lessons he was taking and so began simplifying the process of learning to draw by creating a unique resource … he breaks drawing skills into small, very achievable steps.

Hastings divides his spiral-bound workbook into three parts: drawing “basics” (learning to observe, visualize and draw lines with confidence); mastering “lines” (building confidence for drawing with the three types of building-block lines - straight, circular, elliptical); and expanding drawing skills (learning to see with an eye for artistic composition).

This is not just a book for those without art backgrounds or who have not done much drawing/sketching.  It is for all who want to be better in their drawing endeavours and for those who are reluctant to learn how to draw.   For these people, Hastings offers ten advantages to learning to draw (10 reasons to learn to draw).  Drawing/sketching helps … express emotions … think with a pencil … record a special moment … illustrate a journal or a daily planner … study more effectively by adding visual notes … create unique works of art as gifts … decorate living or office space … make simple maps when giving directions … develop a foundation for painting or sculpting … give captivating presentations

As well, the author offers ten ways to draw more effectively: teach someone else how to draw … draw with a group … visit art galleries and museums … frame and hang one or more of your own drawings … draw very slowly once in a while … draw one composition many times … draw the same subject from many angles … pick a subject and find out how others have drawn it … spend time learning about the drawing subject … study objects up close.  And I would an eleventh: practice.

Want to learn how to draw?  Are you a parent, homeschooling children and want to introduce them to the art of sketching and observational drawing?  Have you been frustrated by drawing classes in the past?  This easy to understand book with its step-by-step directions and accompanying sketches is a gentle introduction to seeing and observing – valuable skills for any artistic endeavor … and for life.
