A teenage girl’s life is full of catastrophes. Apparently, seven in particular: High school, boys, heartbreak, family, job, friends, and the future. For Gert Garibaldi, in her second semester of sophomore year, she has to live each and every one - and it seems like she has to go through them all at the very same time.

Going through the boring, difficult motions of high school, Gert maneuvers these waters with her three best friends: Maggie, the girl who hyperventilates the minute talk turns to boys; Clarice, the girl who wants the guy she fools around with but may never get him; and, Adam, Gert’s best gay-guy friend.

For a few months Gert had a steady boyfriend by the name of Stephen. Although it‘s all been moderately fine for a high school relationship, one day Stephen decides to pop the question of having sex. After she says that she doesn’t know if she wants to quite yet, Stephen dumps her. Big shock there. But, although the talk of sex bothered Gert, the real reason why she isn’t sure is that her mind is on another.

Lucas
is the one - he‘s the knight in shining armor that she wants in her fairytale, but he always seems to be just out of her grasp. They don’t really travel in the same circles in school, so Gert begins to devise a plan. She decides to join the soccer team with her friends to get closer to Lucas. For Gert, trying to learn and play soccer is just as hard as getting Lucas to give her a second glance.

Life seems to be a downer for Gert, until she begins a sort-of “self-discovery“ mission while writing a paper about who she is, and all the ups and downs that make-up the “world of Gert.” She also finds that Lucas is not nearly her only problem, as the catastrophes in her world start to escalate. Her father is rushed to the hospital for surgery, when he suddenly experiences chest pains; she loses her first job just by making a point to a customer who refused to care; her best friend Clarice is heartbroken after giving something she can never take back; and, the boy of Gert’s dreams is simply that…a dream. Gert’s life is a roller coaster and it’s up to her to figure out who she is and what she wants.

This book was absolutely hilarious. The author has done a wonderful job of offering a great story with a perfect balance of humor and drama. The reader actually feels like they’re living in Gert’s world, and standing side-by-side with her as she watches her life unfold.
We all have our own catastrophes, but reading this book allows you the realization that, no matter the ups and downs, life is a truly amazing thing. Enjoy!
