In this relatively short book of 59 pages, John Diamond, M.D., appeals to our egocentrism—he stresses that, by trying to help the elderly to achieve True Health, we can hopefully find it for ourselves at a younger age than we might otherwise do. The Veneration of Life: Through the Disease to the Soul and The Creative Imperative is a summary of Diamond’s more than four decades working in the field of psychiatry, complementary medicine, and holism.

The Veneration of Life is of special interest to those of us who have a genetic predisposition towards developing Alzheimer’s disease in our old age—as we grow older, the fear that we, too, will succumb is ever present, no matter how hard we try to put it to one side. Diamond explores the nature of True Health in a way that no general practitioner has either the time or the inclination to do. By expanding our awareness of the impact that the disease can have on our lives, he provides us with a positive alternative that should help to boost our life energy and to allay our fears.

Dr. Diamond has the honesty and openness to share with us his own personal experiences and the relevant details of the relationship that he had with his mother. We are privileged to participate in his domestic circle, characterized by comfort and reassurance. Diamond has a very special message that he wishes to convey through the book. He would like us to accept Alzheimer’s disease if it is present in our loved ones and even, to an extent, to be grateful for it.

According to the author, the primary therapeutic approach to adopt towards anyone suffering from Alzheimer’s “must be to help him to look outward and to give, for altruistic service can activate the Therapeutic Power within him which alone can cure.” One of the most poignant chapters in this book consists of a letter written to the author by his niece, describing how her physical closeness to Nanny, the affectionate term used for her grandmother, brought her to the realization of the close relation between Music and touch.

For all those who are affected by disease, Diamond offers a great deal of reassurance. This restorative work is of such importance that it should form part of any caregiver’s own library, as well as part of every nursing college’s library.
