Since 1988 Joan Rattner Heilman has come up every few years with a revised edition of her Unbelievably Good Deals and Great Adventures That You Absolutely Can’t Get Unless You’re Over 50.  If you have never owned one of these indispensable guides, which incidentally has sold over a million copies, and you are over the age of fifty, do yourself a favor and purchase the most recent 2009-2010 edition.

Much of the information contained in the last edition is also included in this new tome; however, there have been several updates and revisions and even if you do own the last copy, you can still profit from purchasing the updated one.

We all agree that in today’s grim economic climate all of us are struggling to find the most bang for our buck particularly if we are on a limited budget. Heilman presents a variety of money saving possibilities to the over 50 crowd pertaining to travel, hotels and motels, car rentals, senior discounts for train, bus and boat travel in North America, and cutting costs on trips abroad and on cruises. There are chapters dealing with intergenerational adventures, singles on the road, participating in learning experiences, sports activities, finding perks in parks, discounts offered by various retail outlets, volunteering and a list of over-50 organizations.

Some of the most useful sections of the book include a country-by-country breakdown of rail deals that are offered to seniors. Another is the comprehensive listing of hotels with their phone numbers and web sites offering senior discounts. An entire chapter is devoted to alternative lodgings such as Affordable Travel Club that consists of a B&B club that when you join offers the opportunity to stay in a host’s home for as little as $15 for a single or $20 for a double per room per night per stay. It is expected that members reciprocate by offering their homes to members of the club under the same terms and conditions. Other possibilities that are mentioned in this chapter are the Evergreen Bed and Breakfast Club, Hostelling, Robson Communities, Del Webb’s Sun Cities, US Servas, WCI Communities, Welcome Traveller, and Women Welcome Women Worldwide.  Addresses, phone numbers and web sites are also provided where you can follow up and see if any of these suit your fancy.

In addition to the above, there are some other attention-grabbing suggestions. For example, if you are a “gentleman” and a good dancer, you could possibly hook up with a cruise ship as a dance host. Generally, you receive a complimentary cruise or you might be requested to pay a small daily fee. Remember the movie Out to Sea staring Jack Lemmon and Walter Mathau where this hilarious couple were employed as dance hosts on a cruise boat? Their intentions however were a bit devious and I don’t recommend you follow this couple’s example.

It should be pointed out that the guide is not only restricted to travel bargains as it also includes a chapter on securing the best shopping deals that are offered by retailers all over the USA and Canada. These include the grocery store, pharmacies, retails stores, restaurants, tax return help, auto and house insurance, and many more.

Joan Rattner-Heilman has authored more than a dozen books and hundreds of newspaper and magazine articles. According to the back cover of her latest book, she`s an experienced traveler and savvy consumer who can spot a good deal. After reading Unbelievably Good Deals and Great Adventures That You Absolutely Can’t Get Unless You’re Over 50, you most likely will come to the same conclusion. And although the book may be a mere two hundred and eight two pages it is huge in accomplishment.
