Ramiel Nagel, in his book Cure Tooth Decay, examines common dental theories and thoroughly explains how these theories have failed us. He teaches us how certain special whole foods can make our teeth sound and resistant to decay. The author not only shows the reader how to prevent gum disease and tooth decay…but how to heal it once it has occurred. Nagel refutes the widely accepted idea that carbohydrates (such as sugar) sticking to the teeth… is the prime cause of tooth decay. One of the main points the author shares with us is that it is not the food and bacteria in our mouths which cause tooth decay but it is instead…the condition or structure of our teeth which determines whether or not our teeth will become affected by tooth decay. The author stresses the point that diet is the key factor in preventing and curing many dental problems.
Back in the 30s and 40s a dentist, Dr.Weston Price, travelled around the world conducting his priceless nutritional research on traditional cultures. He found that the remote communities which ate their natural diets (no sugar or other refined foods) had no need for toothbrushes. It was common for members of these communities to have food stuck to their teeth and sometimes Dr. Price found actual green slime on the people’s teeth. Despite the lack of what we call dental hygiene, these people rarely had any cavities.
In the foreword to this book, Dr. Timothy Gallagher explains what is really behind our tooth decay epidemic. I want to include the whole paragraph because it is a point that we need to focus on and that Ramiel also focuses on throughout this book.
“Your diet is the key to creating a healthy mouth. There is no other way about it. This is the key issue, and the central theme of Cure Tooth decay. When people eat too many processed foods, especially sugar and flour products, they wreak havoc on the body. Insulin levels spike, cortisol goes up, and the flow of parotid gland hormone changes, resulting in cavities. When you consume too much sugar, the hormones that control tooth mineralization change for the worse. When you have adequate healthy hormones, the tooth is healthy and is engaged in the process of maintaining and building healthy tooth structure, through the process of mineralization. When you don’t have a good diet, your body’s ability to repair and maintain healthy teeth and gums is severely limited. And the result is tooth destruction, or demineralization. If you learn one thing from this book, it should be that eating too much processed sugar and flour products upsets the entire hormone system. This not only sets you up for tooth decay or gum disease, but makes your entire body overly acidic. In the acidic state, harmful bacteria and fungi can thrive.”
I am reviewing this book for a second time and I am doing so because “Cure Tooth Decay” (second edition) is a very significant and notable book and Ramiel has added much valuable information which was not included in the first edition. He is continually refining and improving this much needed work. Two subjects that especially interested me were the sections on grains and how our “bite” can affect overall health. While focusing on the idea that nutrients and hormonal balance determine the health of our teeth, we need to realize that certain foods in their raw unprepared state contain antinutrients which prevent our bodies from absorbing important vitamins and minerals. One of these antinutrients is phytic acid, which is found in grains. The author gives suggestions on how to minimize the phytic acid content and also explains what foods should be eaten along with the grains for the purpose of maximizing specific vitamin and mineral intake and absorption. For example, in the indigenous cultures that Dr. Price studied, dairy products were noted to be consumed along with the grains to insure adequate calcium absorption. The phytic acid in the grains is known to bond with such minerals as calcium, magnesium, iron and zinc, making them less available to the body. The book also shares research which indicates that vitamin C and D also protect against grain toxins. We don’t want to go to all the trouble of eating what we are told is healthy food….only to have the nutrients blocked by improper processing and imbalances of certain foods , such as grains. We need to be aware of how traditional societies prepared their foods and in what combinations they ate them.
Nagel details the profound negative effects that a poor bite can have on a person’s health. I had never considered that a poor bite could disrupt other parts of the body besides the teeth and jaw….so this crucial information has connected many of the dots for me personally. I will now be looking into this aspect much more deeply. The author relates how important prenatal nutrition is in the formation of our teeth and in the formation of dental arches which are wide enough to accommodate all of our teeth. Narrow jaws and crowded teeth are not due to accident or heredity but to poor maternal nutrition. When nutrition is adequate, there are ample building blocks available to allow the body to reach its genetic potential of perfectly aligned teeth.We are not told this but orthodontic problems can be prevented.
Jaw misalignment can interfere with the proper release of substance P (a neuropeptide). Too much of this substance over time can wear out the nervous system. Rami tells us “excess substance P from bite imbalances leads to hypersensitivity to touch, smells, light, and loud noises as well as to general irritability. Disease conditions that respond well to jaw alignment include fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, autism, asthma, and all of the autoimmune disorders. When your jaw is relaxed, then substance P is not being overly released because your jaw is aligned. Substance P can then do its job to help heal and regenerate all the parts of your body. A relaxed jaw from a correct bite makes your body relaxed and your body rejuvenates itself. A relaxed bite keeps us youthful, helps us heal well, and have the strength and energy when we need it. This is the power of your bite.” I seriously wonder….how many of us are wandering around in the fog of chronic illness due to a misaligned jaw?
Other crucial information in this book includes healing tooth infections, regrowing secondary dentin, forming new tooth enamel, avoiding root canals, specific food suggestions to help heal your teeth, a section on children’s dental health, tooth powder recipes and much more.
Ramiel bases a lot of his work on the research of Dr. Weston Price and also includes the ideas of other time honored dental and nutritional researchers. He then incorporates all of their findings and combines them with his knowledge and experience. His hard work has resulted in a very, informative, practical and helpful book that if followed can help to heal our world. The information in Nagel’s book not only can improve the health of our teeth and gums….but the whole body will benefit from his nutritional suggestions. We truly are what we eat.
