It’s very difficult to be able to create a story, especially nowadays, that has a focus on vampires without reviewers saying, “That’s already been done.”  It seems as if everywhere we turn all we see is yet another ‘Bella and Edward’ book trying to become the next bestseller.  That’s why I am always extremely excited when I receive one of this author’s books in the mail.  For readers who don’t know, Amelia Atwater-Rhodes has been writing a fascinating series called, The Den of Shadows.  In every single one of these books, she broaches a fantastical, mystical subject and creates a cast of characters that are not only interesting and fun to read, but also offer the suspense, romance, and mystery that other authors just can’t seem to master.

In this latest story, readers begin by sitting in a car with Adianna Vida (Adia), as she goes speeding down the road.  Adia is beyond upset about what’s taken place; her only sister, Sarah, has been torn from her side by two vampires named Nikolas and Kristopher.  Adia had to watch her sister perish and turn to the “dark” side – becoming a monster right before her eyes, and she has no idea how to handle what she knows is about to commence.

Aida rushes home and sees her mother, Dominique Vida, surrounded by other “clans” getting ready to hear the news that will change the course of their futures.  To explain…the Vida’s are an ancient clan of vampire-hunting witches who sometimes work with the Arun clan – another ancient group who fight to protect the world from monstrous entities that could bring hurt and pain to the masses.  Other clans include the Smoke line that pride themselves as healers, and the Marinitch line who herald themselves as scholars.  Members of all these clans are in the Vida kitchen, located in a small town in Massachusetts.  As Aida tells her mother what has become of Sarah, Dominique can hardly contain her misery; she must suddenly choose between the clan she is head of, and her own precious daughter.  What she feels is that her daughter is now gone – a vampire monster has taken over Sarah’s’ body – and Dominique decides to invoke the Rights of Kin.  This is an old witch law that states, when kin are slain there will be no mercy; there is no safe haven for that being.  Aida holds her breath and feels her heart break as her own mother declares war on her flesh and blood.

No matter how much Aida wants to find a way out of what is to happen, she knows that the clan – the rules that she is bound to uphold and follow – far outweigh her love for her own sister.  Soon, she and Arun pass through the doors of SingleEarth – an international organization dedicated to the peaceful coexistence of vampires and witches.  Sarah has tried to “hide” in this facility; she has no desire to be a monster, but marks on her flesh that she’ll wear until the end of time make it impossible to hide what she now is.  She needs these people to help her as an Immortal, live and function in a mortal world without hurting anyone.  What Sarah doesn’t know, however, is that the Rights of Kin far outweigh the protection that SingleEarth provides.  And soon…Sarah is on the run from the only people in the world she’s ever loved.

Sarah’s story, as she struggles to find a place in a world she knows nothing about is at once emotional, romantic, and intriguing.  All Sarah has ever wanted was her older sister’s pride and now, because of falling for the wrong boy and letting her guard down, all she’ll get from her sister is certain death.

This story takes place in a twenty-four hour period, and will keep readers flipping the pages until they come to the final word.  The secrets that are revealed about Dominique are extremely interesting, and the twists and turns will keep everyone guessing.  And…the end?  Well…let’s just say you’ve got to read this book because the ending was fantastic!  Enjoy!
