Readers, hold on to your hats.  This book is a terrific read and a great third novel for this author.

The title PEARL, refers to a young woman who is married to an older man but, seems to get her kicks by teasing the men of the town and it seems that she is either the town tramp or a lonely person who is looking for anything to spice up her life.  There is a lot of speculation in the town of Faircloth, VA about the marriage between Pearl and her much older husband.  Their relationship is cordial and they are respectful to each other but, very seldom seen together in the town.  Sadly, Pearl's savagely beaten body is found outside of town and the police investigation will cover many secrets that were dormant in the town for many years.  Townspeople think that it was a stranger passing through town that killed Pearl and wouldn't it be convenient to blame a transient rather than look into the residents of this little town?

Sometime after Pearl is found, the burned body of a young girl is found in a vacant house in town and the attack on another woman comes about shortly after.  The police are baffled and there are other secrets to be found among the townspeople.  Questions are abundant.  Such as, who was this young woman and why was she living alone in a vacant house?  Who visited her many nights after dark and who would have left her in a burning building?  Also, as to the other woman; why would anyone beat and rape a woman leaving her for dead in this small town in rural Virginia?  Were these crimes done by the same person or by some psycho going through the town and leaving distruction in his wake?

The Sheriff and his deputies will have a lot of clues that they can't figure out and some of them also have secrets concerning Pearl and the other two women.  But, as things so often happen, the killer makes a mistake and things come to light that were never meant to be.

I can't tell you any more because it would spoil the story.  But, take it from me you will not put this book down once you start reading.  I read it in one day and absolutely refused to stop until it was completed.  Be sure to get a copy of PEARL.  You will not regret it.
