Author: Salman Rushdie
Everyone certainly knows the talent that this well-known author brings to the table when he puts his thoughts down on paper. Not only is Mr. Rushdie the author of ten previous novels (which has awarded him the Booker Prize, as well as the Best of Booker just recently), he has also created short stories, anthologies, and three works of nonfiction. In this, his latest novel, from the beautiful words and happy adventures, to the amazing characters and wordplay that you will not soon forget, every part of this new novel is a “gift” to readers everywhere.
Our main character is Luka who lives with his older brother, mother, and father, in the city of Kahani located in the land of Alifbay. Luka has two pets – a dog named Bear, and a bear named Dog. These pets came to be owned by Luka in a very strange way. One day, a traveling circus came to Luka’s town. The circus was known far and wide for the Incredible Fire Illusion, and was run by Captain Aag – the Ringmaster. Captain Aag was a horrific human being who didn’t take care of his animals at all. The elephants were practically starving; the bear and sheep had not been brushed for what looked like years; and, Captain Aag liked to use a whip to keep the poor creatures in line.
Now, Luka really wanted to see the circus, but his father was completely against it. The whole family believed that you never, ever hurt a poor animal for monetary gain. As Captain Aag came through town, Luka was so angry when he saw how horrible the animals looked that he shouted out a curse into the wind. That evening, under the big top, Captain Aag’s reign as the ‘Ringmaster that no one could hurt’ came to an end – when the animals stood up for themselves against the horrible bully. Soon after, Captain Aag disappeared into the mountains and all the animals scattered to the four winds. Bear and Dog showed up at Luka’s house and became his pets.
Luka’s brother, Haroun, is eighteen years older than Luka and has had his share of adventures. It is Luka’s turn to go off into the world and seek one for himself; he’s never wanted anything more since his father sat him down and told him stories about the World of Magic and what is truly out there for him to discover. You see, in Luka’s life, the magic and non-magic world coexist side by side. One night, Dad falls asleep with a great big smile on his face and doesn’t wake up in the morning. He’s not deceased…not by a long shot. Dad wears the sweetest smile in the world and is stuck in his fantasy dreams – loving that place far more than reality.
It is up to Luka to save his father and bring him back to the real world. Soon he must take a journey that will show him things like the Lake of Wisdom which stands in the shadow of the Mountain of Knowledge, where the Fire of Life Burns.
The adventure is absolutely stunning, and the extraordinary objects and scenery that Mr. Rushdie creates will live in your minds and hearts for a very long time to come. Enjoy!
