This
latest book in the Liss MacCrimmon Scottish mysteries takes all her
fans back to the fantastic town of Moosetookalook, Maine. Liss
is still working hard as the owner of the only Scottish Emporium in
her neck of the woods, that she purchased from the original owner,
her Aunt Margaret. But for this particular story, Liss is
mostly spending her time at the newly renovated hotel, The Spruces.
The grand re-opening of this magnificent building is being celebrated
by hosting the Burns Night Supper (which is a tribute to the
fantastic Scottish poet, Robert Burns), that is sponsored every year
by the Scottish Heritage Appreciation Society.
Sounds
fun, right? Well…let’s just say that the members of the
aforementioned Appreciation Society don’t seem to appreciate much
of anything; and Liss has to spend most of her time diffusing
arguments and making sure that the men in “clan” kilts don’t
beat each other to death with their worthless bagpipes.
Now
Dan Ruskin’s father (Dan is the man who Liss is falling desperately
in love with) was the man who purchased The Spruces and has spent a
whole heck of a lot of money to get it gorgeous and re-opened for the
masses. In fact, if this weekend doesn’t work, the grand
re-opening may just be the final curtain on the whole project.
After all the guests have arrived, a blizzard begins with such force
that all the guests seem to know that they will be stuck inside for
quite a while…and that’s when the fun really begins.
In
the great building are the “leaders” of the Appreciation Society
named the MacMillan’s. Eunice MacMillan and her husband,
Phil, are the leaders of this Scottish bunch and like nothing more
than to snipe at Liss and tell her what they want and need that is
most assuredly missing in the hotel. Phil has a twin brother
named Phineas who is also a real pain in the kilt, and also likes to
tell Liss and everyone around him that they’re certainly not being
treated like the royalty they believe they are. Soon, the
MacMillan’s are yelling because a family brooch with their clan
crest has been stolen from their room and they want justice
now!
Liss calls in Sherri Willett – her friend from
school and a local police officer – to come solve the crime.
Was it stolen or was this just a joke being played against the
MacMillan twins? Once the speech is made at dinner by one of
the MacMillan brothers which becomes more of a Friar’s Club Roast
as he belittles almost everyone in the Society, all heck breaks
loose. The power goes out, the blizzard knocks down the big
spruces outside the hotel, and a body is found in a storage closet –
dead in his kilt.
Soon the elegant hotel begins to
resemble the Overlook from The Shining fame, and everyone from the
housekeeping staff on up is a suspect. The dialogue is so much
fun, the puzzle is mystifying and quite impossible to solve until the
very end - which is always a plus, and the author, as always, adds
that touch of romance between Liss and Dan to cover all bases for all
readers’ interests. Enjoy!
