I have been a huge fan of these mysteries for years. Not only have I enjoyed the intricate plots, but I also love the cats as they make the human beings wake up and see the clues that are right in front of them.

In this new book, being released just in time for Christmas, Joe Grey is sitting up in the trees watching Maudie Toola move back into her childhood home From his perch, he sees the moving van arrive, and soon understands why Maudie has returned. She has escaped Los Angeles after a tragic event; while she was riding in the car with her son, his wife, and their children, a truck pulled up alongside them on a dark, deserted road, and shot her son and daughter-in-law. Maudie escaped with the kids, and has rushed back home to Molena Point, trying to escape the past and change the future.

Unfortunately, she doesn’t seem to know that the killer of her son has followed her to the small, wonderful village beside the sea; nor does she realize that four cats in the neighborhood seem to have Maudie and her family in their sites. All Maudie can think of is building her quilting studio, and trying to usher in a happy Christmas for the children.

On top of everything happening in Maudie’s life, the little town of Molena Point is also up against some extremely brutal people who are breaking into homes in the village and harming the people inside in order to get away with the loot.

With all this going on, it seems somewhat odd to Joe and his friends – including, my favorite, his “tabby-lady,” Dulcie – that a new cat has appeared in the village by the sea. He’s a tomcat with a past; a wise one who is carrying with him a message from a state prisoner for delivery to the chief of police. Not only that, but this is the one cat that can link all these strange crimes from the past and present together for Joe to solve.

As I said at the beginning, I am a huge fan of Joe. When I think about him, I always remember what my mother said about the cats having the run of the neighborhood. Everywhere you turn on our small street, the bright blue eyes, or emerald green, are staring back at us from the bushes, the tall grass, or the porches of our friends and neighbors. I’ve always wondered what they’re thinking.

I will also remain a huge fan of Charlie, the local sheriff, who is trying to desperately solve these crimes in Molena Point; as well as a fan of Ryan’s, the young woman who designed and built a rooftop tower with overstuffed pillows for Joe Grey to hang out in. People like this are truly people you want to be friends with. Any cat person – especially this author – is a friend of mine.

Enjoy! I can’t wait to see what Joe and his friends have in store for the New Year!
