This book is excellent from the word, go. It is so nice, after all the vampires, to have a truly mystical story in my hands that will lead young adult readers into a whole new world that they’ve never even had one inkling existed. This series truly has its place right beside Fallen on my bookshelf

As a reader who has been beyond enjoying the Fallen series by Lauren Kate, I was absolutely thrilled when this new book showed up in my mailbox. It was most definitely right up my alley.

Hailey Tarbell is a sixteen-year-old girl with more secrets than soap-opera stars have. Not only is her background extremely strange and mystical, but she is also the bearer of immense powers that were passed down to her through her Irish bloodline. It is also extremely well-known that Hailey wants nothing more than her mother to rise from the dead and come back into her life.

She lives in a tiny hole-in-the-wall called Gypsum, Missouri with her Grams, who is a drug dealer in the town; as well as a young boy named Chub, who Gram adopted so that she could receive the state’s money for as long as she raised him. Chub has some learning/mental disorders, but the one thing he does know is that Hailey is his absolute best friend.

At school, Hailey is located at the bottom of the food chain. All of her clothes are poor, shabby, and secondhand; and, all the kids in the town seem to know her Grandmother and call her a witch. Hailey could probably make friends if she revealed the fact that she’s far better than what she shows the world. In fact, at sports like vaulting and gymnastics, she actually has to concentrate in order to conceal her power, and perform badly so that she can stay under the radar with the rest of the school.

One day, while in the middle of vaulting, one of the students who has always disliked Hailey – Milla – ends up harming herself when she falls off the vault and knocks herself unconscious. Without thinking, Hailey runs to the body on the floor, places her hand on Milla’s head, and whispers some magic words that literally have Milla opening her eyes. Hailey practically runs out of the gym so no one will notice what she did.

Soon, Hailey discovers an old necklace inside her family’s home, a necklace that unveils a cursed secret. Then, out of the blue, an unknown Aunt arrives at their door and takes Hailey away from the hideous house. She is the only one who can explain to her niece what exactly happened to Hailey’s mom; what Grams is really hiding; and, the mystery of a laboratory scientist who wants to steal the power that these women have to perhaps use it for evil purposes. The one thing that is most prevalent, however, is how Hailey is going to find a way to understand the Banished ones.

This book is excellent from the word, go. It is so nice, after all the vampires, to have a truly mystical story in my hands that will lead young adult readers into a whole new world that they’ve never even had one inkling existed. This series truly has its place right beside Fallen on my bookshelf.
