I have to reiterate what I said when I read the first book in this series titled, Fallen: You can all keep your beloved Edward and Jacob because Daniel is the ONLY super-hot super-being that matters, as far as I’m concerned. For anyone who has been living in a cave and didn’t read Lauren Kate’s first book I will: a) catch you up; and, b) tell you to run to the bookstore NOW and immerse yourself in this fantastic, amazingly-written series.

In the first book we were introduced to an unforgettable cast of characters that hovered around a teenage girl named Luce. When we first met up with Luce, she was being herded off to a school called Sword & Cross – a very prison-like environment – where she would have to find a way to deal with the odd things that were happening to her, including the “spontaneous combustion” of her boyfriend. While there, Luce found the boy she’d loved – yet didn’t remember she’d loved – for centuries. His name is Daniel and he’s an angel. Quickly we were thrust into a war between the good and bad sides of life – angels versus demons – in a race to protect Luce from a horrific prophecy that’d been put in place thousands of years before.

With this second exhilarating novel, we are shipped to the West Coast for a little R&R. Daniel, unbeknownst to Luce, has called an eighteen day truce between his people and the other “evil” side of the divine genetic pool, in order to join forces to stop the hideous beings who are trying desperately to wipe Luce from the face of the earth.

Now, Luce can’t remember her past lives. Although she’s been told that she’s been down on this earth over and over again, always ending up dying in a huge blast of fire because of her love for Daniel, she can’t remember a single solitary image from any point in her history. And Daniel isn’t giving up any information whatsoever; he locks himself behind a wall and won’t let Luce in, which is driving her absolutely crazy.

When she steps off the plane and into Daniel’s waiting arms, he drives her to a new school called Shoreline where she’ll be safe. Luce is so tired of school; all she wants is to stay with Daniel forever, but she has no idea the trials and pain he’s going through in order to keep her safe and…alive.

Going back and forth between anger at a boyfriend who won’t talk to her, and loving him so much she can’t see straight most of the time, Luce enters the new school and finds that her life inside these warm California walls is going to be a heck of a lot different than her “prison term” at Sword & Cross. She soon meets up with her roommate, Shelby, who is sarcastic, funny, and more than a bit angry with the new girl. Although Luce doesn’t know why she’s so wretched to her, she soon finds out; other students seem to look at her like she’s Lady Ga Ga, and are all standing in line to join her fan club. Luce soon discovers that her past lives with Daniel have been circulated for a long, long time making them, literally, the Romeo & Juliet of every time period. She not only has new friends who look at her with stars in their eyes, but she also has two teachers – one angel and one demon – who are in love with one another and on the lookout to keep Luce safe from the vacant-eyed predators with silver bows called the Outcasts, who want to make sure that Luce leaves this earth forever.

In order to save herself and understand exactly what she needs to do in order to survive, Luce must look into her past and try to remember what happened way back when. Using creatures called the Announcers, Luce discovers a window into the past that she must enter in order to survive and have any chance at a future with Daniel

On a side note, there’s also a new “hot” divine one introduced in this second novel by the name of Miles, who will be yet another on the long list of angels and demons that Lauren Kate has created who will make the female audience leap for joy. The adventure inside and outside Shoreline School is fantastic, and the plot of the story will keep ALL readers up ALL night until they’ve soaked up the very last word on the very last page. Then, and only then, will fans throw the book across the room because they will be desperate for the next novel titled, Passion, that they won’t be able to get their hands on until 2011. (Yes, I am one of those fans. Oh, to be the gardener at Ms. Kate’s house so I could steal the manuscript! J) Yes, guys and gals, this series is THAT good!
