Book 1 of this extremely cool series was inspired by The Hunchback of Notre Dame, while the second harkens back to the fantastic tale of Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. I have to say, I love it when good authors use fantastic novels for inspiration to go even further into the reaches of science fiction and fantasy. We, the readers, are the ones who truly get the real “gift.”
In the beginning of this wonderfully adventurous tale, we meet up with Griff. Griff is a young man who lost his mom and dad on a shipwreck. He survived by himself for six months on a deserted island until one day some extremely strange-looking hounds – dogs made of metal – appeared on his island. After these creatures had corralled Griff, they loaded him on a steamship and delivered the young, terrified boy to the feet of Dr. Cornelius Hyde – a brilliant scientist living in a cave. The island that Griff finds himself on is owned by a wealthy man who is known only as The Guild Master, and his assistant, Dr. Hyde, feeds poor Griff harmful elixirs that eventually make him turn colors.
We then turn to Collette, an eighteen-year-old French agent who is on a steamship called Vendetta. Her job is to try and figure out what’s lurking in the depths of the ocean that’s sinking all the ships. Project Ictineo is what this novel is wrapped around, and is exactly what Modo needs to solve. Modo is an orphan who was trained by Mr. Socrates of the Permanent Association. Modo can do many things, but the most interesting is the fact that the boy can literally turn himself into other human forms for short periods of time. Although Modo helped the Permanent Association in Book 1, solving the case and becoming Mr. Socrates’ most valuable agent – like a young James Bond – this time will be extremely different for Modo and his team; this time – a young orphan boy named Griff will be battling for the other side.
I have to say, out of all the characters, I truly loved Colette Brunet. She’s an absolutely fearless French spy, and young, female readers will literally want to be this one’s best friend forever. Modo is brilliant, and his sweetheart partner, Octavia, is just as street-smart as ever. The story will enthrall all adventure, science fiction, and fantasy readers, whether young adult or adult. This is one of those series, like Potter, that will intrigue everybody! I can’t wait for Book 3.
