Again, Ms. Cooney has hit the nail on the head and offered a YA story that will draw readers in and, perhaps, teach parents a huge lesson about the real meaning of loving and trusting their offspring.  Another fantastic job!

Everyone by now, unless living in a cave J, has heard of this fantastic teen/YA “thriller” author.  In fact, Ms. Cooney was the writer-extraordinaire who gave readers the bestselling novel, The Face on the Milk Carton, which I still maintain is one of the best YA books written.  In fact, in this world that seems to have gone “sour” on innocence (which I won’t get started on because every time I turn on the news we’ve lost another sweet soul at the hands of, usually, the parent), Ms. Cooney reminds us that lying to children, or harming them in any way, is a horrible error in judgment.

In this new offering, the tale is slightly different.  Missy is a young girl who is a sophomore in high school, an avid shopper, and one of the prettiest girls in her neck of the woods.  Claire is her cousin.  Claire is a junior, just over the state line (they live in CT and NY, respectively).  She is in love with a boy named Aiden, she gets straight A’s and wants to be a doctor for life, and is absolute best friends with her cousin Missy.  In fact, they are so tight that it almost seems like they were stuck together since birth.  Hmmm…

Missy is walking around one day and hears an expert talking over the radio.  The expert is going in-depth on the subject of newborn babies, separation at birth, etc., and it leads Missy to start wondering about things.  After all, Claire and she look a great deal alike and they feel like true sisters.  It’s actually a bit eerie how they finish each other’s sentences.  The nagging feeling in Missy’s head, and the questions swirling in her brain, just won’t go away.  There is a part of her that wants to question her parents to see if what she’s thinking could, perhaps, be the truth.

Unfortunately, instead of just asking and getting the questions over with, Missy gets involved in a school project that involves scientific hoaxes.  Without thinking, she asks Claire to help her, and goes on to announce to the school that she has found her long, lost twin sister.  Everyone buys it!  One young man even bought it so deeply that he took the video he made of the two of them and released it on YouTube, causing a backlash that Missy had no idea would happen.  You see, her parents and Claire’s parents have been hiding some monumental secrets and they are about to get exposed.  The Pandora’s Box is open, and Missy and Claire are stuck with a future that neither one of them ever wanted.

The mysteries and secrets revealed in this book are truly heartwarming, inspiring, and a bit hard.  It makes you wonder why some adults feel the need to lie to their kids about important subjects, instead of just telling the truth and not having to deal with the consequences of their story-telling later on in life when it’s much harder to deal with.

Again, Ms. Cooney has hit the nail on the head and offered a YA story that will draw readers in and, perhaps, teach parents a huge lesson about the real meaning of loving and trusting their offspring.  Another fantastic job!
